North Yorkshire Music Service is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Musical Director for the Pop Choir at Whitby Music Centre.   

 

About us

Whitby Music Centre is a lively and very active Music Centre, providing musical learning for children and adults across a range of instruments and genres. Delivering musical activities in Whitby and the surrounding area, we provide regular performance opportunities in our concerts and participation in community events.

Our friendly and dedicated pop choir welcomes young people and adults to discover and enjoy the musical, personal and social benefits of choral singing.  The choir currently rehearse once a week during term time but the fun and friendship extend beyond weekly rehearsals! 

The choir, which launched at the end of 2024, draws its repertoire from rock, pop and musicals.  It performs at concerts and at festivals around the area, both on its own and with one of our bands.

 

About the role 

Due to maternity leave, we are looking for an experienced and passionate Musical Director who will plan and lead rehearsals that develop the choir's musicianship and motivate the members and prepare items to sing at local events.

The contract is for 1.75 hours per week, 30 sessions per academic year (pro-rata over 52 weeks). Additional time for concerts and events can also be claimed on a monthly basis.  

The new post holder will begin the role in September covering maternity leave for a minimum of one term, possibly longer and will be run on a weekday evening to suit the successful candidate.

The ideal candidate will be creative and enthusiastic, confident in supporting young people and adults at different stages of their musical journey. They will create an inspiring and inclusive learning environment, incorporating Youth Voice and child-centred approaches. They will be interested in contributing to the community of the music centre and collaborating with the wider staff team.

Essential:

  • Strong knowledge repertoire and teaching strategies.
  •  Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable.

  • Experience in safeguarding and partnership working.
  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in music/performance.
