The Music Education Teacher is a hands-on position responsible for implementing engaging instruction for The Strawbridge School students. This position requires excellent planning in order to embed Career and College Readiness Standards in challenging music curriculum while meeting the needs outlined in each student’s Individualized Education Program. The position is highly collaborative with the vocational department of Strawbridge and requires the ability to differentiate for many types of learners.

What does this job do specifically?

Essential Functions:

• Provides differentiated, direct music instruction to students with and without disabilities.
• Develops lesson plans and organizes instructional materials to provide individualized and group instruction in order to meet the needs of each student as stated in their Individualized Education Program.
• Provide instrumental music lessons, on an as-needed individual basis.
• Provide group vocal and instrumental lessons.
• Serve as a music resource for all Board of Child Care staff.
• Coordinate music activities for Strawbridge School, including lessons provided by guest specialists for musically gifted students.
• Coordinate music assemblies and provide music, upon request, for other school activities.
• Assesses the progress of students on a regular basis utilizing tests, curriculum measurements, and data collection.  Develops and presents grade reports as required.
• Works collaboratively with team members to effectively implement student Individualized Education Programs.
• Consults with direct supervisor regarding ordering materials and equipment, including tools needed to differentiate for students with disabilities and including the replacement and repair of instruments.
• Provide guidance and direction, planning daily activities for assigned Assistant Teacher, and 1:1 staff, ensuring each of these roles demonstrates a participating role within the classroom.
• Ensures that the classroom staff adheres to all policies, practices, and expectations for a professional and learning environment.
• Remains knowledgeable of current trends and best practices in the field of special education.
• Maintains accurate and complete records, files, etc. as required by Strawbridge policies and federal, state, and local laws.
• Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings, Interdisciplinary Meetings, staff/teacher meetings, Planning Conferences, in-service training programs, etc.
• Employs provided electronic tools for grade reporting and attendance (e.g. Jupiter Grades), leave reporting (e.g. ADP), and IEP documentation (e.g. Maryland Online), etc.
• Employs instructional technology hardware such as SmartBoards when provided.
• Observes and assess student behavior to establish and maintain discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning.
• Communicates with students when academic and behavioral problems arise.
• Demonstrates knowledge of students’ Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and consistently implements Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIP).
• Establishes and maintains a safe physical environment conducive to learning.
• Plans and executes enrichment experiences such as Breezeway Market.
• Implements school-wide behavior management system.
• Demonstrates familiarity with cultural patterns existing within a community that may affect the behavior of students.
• Establishes relationships with students on a group and individual basis, gaining their confidence and trust and imparting a sense of security.
• Effectively prepares for and teaches students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
• Encourages parent and community involvement.
• Promptly returns phone calls and answer emails.
• Participates in school committees and other ongoing professional activities.
• Provides coverage for lunch periods, school trips, bus duty, etc.

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Music from an accredited college or university.
• Certificated by Maryland State Department of Education in music education.
• One year of related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• A master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Certificated by Maryland State Department of Education in Music Education.
• Four years of teaching experience.
• Experience teaching students with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
