    Position Description

    Advertised Job Summary

    The National Fellowships Coordinator is a professional position in National Fellowships and Scholar Programs (NFSP), a unit in the South Carolina Honors College (SCHC). Staff members should possess a wide-ranging intellectual curiosity and a commitment to working with high ability students. The coordinator will perform a variety of duties in support of the recruitment and advisement of student considering and applying for national fellowships and scholarships with a focus on STEM majors and competitions. The coordinator will facilitate the recruitment and promotion efforts, conduct workshops, provide individual advising and assist in program development and administration. As a staff member in a multi-function unit, the position may include additional responsibilities as assigned to meet the needs of USC's academically talented students and to support the academic mission of the University.

    Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

    • Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

    Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

    • Prior advising with post-secondary high ability students.
    • Working knowledge of national fellowship competitions.
    • Familiarity with STEM disciplines.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, exercise good judgment and discretion, and be able to work courteously with diverse groups.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and maintain confidentiality.
    • Strong computer skills, research skills, presentation skills, good problem solving skills, and the ability to use the internet and social media.
    • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret information accurately are critical.
    • The ability to take direction, initiate action, and work as a team member is essential.

    Job Duties

    Job Duty

    National Fellowship Advising:

    Holistically advises, counsels, and supports students throughout the entire process of considering and applying for various national fellowships and scholarships with an emphasis on STEM majors and competitions. Communicates the benefits of applying, and trains students in the complexities of the application and interview processes for various competitions such as writing essays, completing applications, requesting and obtaining letters of reference, and interview techniques.

    Recruiting and Programing:

    Recruiting and Programming: Identifies and recruits outstanding students who have the potential to win national fellowships by creating, scheduling, and coordinating recruitment and program efforts including, but not limited to, orientation sessions; outreach and recruitment to STEM majors; and individual outreach and follow-up with students referred to the office.

    Data Management and Assessment:

    Works with Database Manager to ensure timely upkeep of competition information in the INFO database. Coordinates assessment process for key competitions, including request for combined results annually. Analyzes collected assessments to identify trends and contribute to annual reports. Reviews accuracy of annual winner's list and coordinates Awards Day data; assists with benchmarking data for select national competitions; and requests additional reflections from fellowship winners annually.

    Advising Technology, Training and Development:

    Uses available technologies to ensure accurate and effective advising. Participates in on-going training to ensure information accuracy and effective advising techniques and knowledge of national fellowships. Keep up to date on NAFA listserv.

    Campus Relationships:

    Cultivate positive working relationships with NFSP and SCHC colleagues, key partner offices on campus, faculty and staff serving on NFSP advisory and scholarship committees and external fellowship communities.

    Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned and participates in events in support of other activities of National Fellowships and Scholar Programs and the Honors College.
