Position: Native Language and Culture Resource Specialist

Supervisor: School Site Principal (In collaboration with Director of Language and Culture)

General Job Description: To support academic and cultural outcomes by offering guidance in cultural understanding through education and community engagement at the school level. The Native language and culture resource specialist will provide teaching, preserving and sharing Native traditions and cultural enrichment, history and language by engaging teachers, students, parents and community.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide culturally appropriate resources to classroom teachers throughout the school year. Track number of students served and number of activities offered.

  2. Offer language and culture enrichment by supporting classroom teachers opportunities to bring culturally relevant consultants, take field trips and cultural activities. Ensure surveys are collected after each activity.

  3. Assist classroom teachers with completing requests and compiling grant deliverables to the grant office. (i.e. Preliminary Approvals, purchase requisitions, flyer, sign in sheets, permission slips, etc.)

  4. Provide support to Native American (NA) students with attendance, academic grades and future academic pathways, as referred or identified. Track number of NA students served.

  5. Communicate accurately with parents/guardians of NA students regarding intervention, program activities and events.

  6. Provide at least five (5) Native language and culture awareness workshops, training and activities each school year.

  7. Assist classroom teachers with culturally relevant Professional Development opportunities (i.e. NIEA, JOM conferences, etc)

  8. Assist Navajo Dual Language Facilitator with the Diné Language Proficiency Assessment (DLPA) and Oral Language and Culture test (ONLC-T-SBA).

  9. Assist Native American Program liaison with CIB/Ed506 collection by communicating with parents for lacking documents.

  10. Collaborate with school staff and administrators in supporting Native American students.

  1. Participate in the school meetings (i.e. Attendance, Professional Learning Communities, etc.)

  2. Stay abreast of current federal, state and Navajo Nation compliance criteria.

  3. Attend all mandatory school meetings and school functions.

Additional duties:

  1. Meet with the Director of Language and Culture three times a year. (Initial, mid and end of year)

  2. Track Native American student data specifically attendance, chronic absenteeism of Native American students, academic grades progression and mentorship.

  3. Submit quarterly data reports to the Director of Language and Culture.

  4. Assist as an interpreter for Navajo Speakers.

Qualifications: Associate Degree in education, counseling or related fields and at least 3 years of related experience preferred.

Knowledge: Knowledge of Federal, State and Navajo Nation language programs. HS graduation requirements. Being bilingual in Navajo is an advantage. Must have passion for helping students succeed.

Skills: Must have strong oral, written communication, and organization skills. Must be detail oriented, accurate and timely with assigned tasks. Must demonstrate the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment, work both independently and within a team, facilitate effective collaboration, and resolve conflict.

Physical Requirements: The following may be required: sitting, standing, bending, walking, reaching, squatting, kneeling and moving about the room or school. Ability to lift up to 50lbs related to equipment/office supplies/associated materials.

Equipment/Technology: Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology. Must be proficient with technology including databases, various software programs, internet tools and communication tools.

Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district.
