NATURAL RESOURCES TECHNICIAN

FULL-TIME POSITION

Under general supervision of the Natural Resource Manager, the Natural Resources

Technician implements natural resources Management plans for Park District

properties; promotes the preservation, conservation and protection of natural

areas and trails; and monitors and addresses public access issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

Performs various unskilled general labor, preventative maintenance and repair

function tasks on park trails and in park natural areas facilities, grounds,

vehicles and equipment; changes oil, lubricates moving parts; checks fluid

levels; replaces belts cleans and maintains park public facilities and grounds;

clears brush and trees; mows and trims grass; plants shrubs and trees; digs

trenches; picks up litter; weeds and sprays as required; removes invasive

plants; cares for animals; assembles bird boxes; monitors and observes

facilities, grounds and equipment for safety and maintenance needs, and takes

appropriate action; repairs pathways and trails.

Assists staff with semi-skilled general labor and maintenance functions; applies

chemicals under license of commercial applicator or limited commercial

applicator; operates machine tools and equipment; performs minor carpentry and

mechanical maintenance.

Performs variety of customer support duties when needed; may assist the

Naturalist with special events; may provide information to the general public;

maintains proper supply stock levels.

May assist in snow plowing and salt spreading roadways, parking areas and

walkways.

Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERRP safety standards that

pertain to essential functions.

Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance; may be required to work extra

hours, evening hours, weekends and/or holidays as necessary; due to the nature

of the job, when scheduled for on-call assignment, the Natural Resources

Technician must be available to return to work after normal work hours or on

weekends and/or holidays when called to do so, to handle maintenance and/or

safety issues that arise.

Starting pay of $17 - $21/hr, depending on experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED) and

six (6) months' work experience in building maintenance, habitat management

and/or landscaping work; or any equivalent combination of education, experience,

and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license. Must remain insurable

under the Park District's vehicle insurance policy. Must be certified in First

Aid, CPR, and BBP by a recognized health care educational provider or obtain

certification within six (6) months of employment in this position. Must

possess an Ohio Pesticide Commercial Applicators License or obtain license

within six (6) months of employment in the position. Must successfully complete

basic firefighter/introduction to fire behavior course (i.e., S-130/S-190/L-180)

within first year of employment pursuant to national interagency incident

management system (i.e., wildland & prescribed fire qualification system guide).

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS:

Knowledge of custodial methods and techniques; building construction,

maintenance, and repair; general construction, maintenance and repair; park and

recreation facilities, equipment and supplies. Habitat Management practices;

safe herbicide practices.

Skill in: Mechanics; carpentry; electrical; motor vehicle operation; use of

bench and/or hand tools; use of mechanics' tools and equipment; light and medium

equipment operation; word processing; computer operation; use of modern office

equipment; data entry. Use of chainsaws and other forestry equipment.
