NATURAL RESOURCES YOUTH APPRENTICE (Hourly)

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION Under the direction of the Supervisor of Facilities, the Natural Resources Youth Apprentice performs entry-level landscaping and grounds maintenance duties that support the safe, attractive, and well- maintained appearance of Cecil County Public Schools property. Working approximately 10 hours per week, the apprentice develops competencies in landscaping, horticulture, turf and grounds care, equipment operation, and workplace safety through structured on-the-job training with an assigned worksite mentor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION

1. Assist the Facilities Department grounds crew with routine landscaping and grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, and weeding.
2. Operate and care for hand tools, power equipment, and materials as directed by the Supervisor of Facilities, following all required training and safety procedures.
3. Implementing daily work plans as specified by the Supervisor of Facilities by assisting and supporting the grounds and facilities team.
4. Assist with planting, mulching, pruning, and watering trees, shrubs, turf, and flower beds on school system property.
5. Assisting with seasonal grounds work, including leaf and debris removal, athletic field preparation, and clearing walkways and entrances.
6. Support the Facilities Department with litter removal and the general upkeep of school grounds, walkways, and outdoor learning spaces.
7. Follow all safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and the safe handling, cleaning, and storage of tools and equipment.
8. Maintains regular, on-time attendance.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
10. Complete required youth apprenticeship training hours, competency documentation, and progress reviews with the assigned worksite mentor. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
11. Is a senior in a Cecil County Public High School with a schedule that supports employment.
12. Is recommended by the school administrator/counselor.
13. Is at least 16 years old. (over)
14. Has the ability to get to/from work location.
15. Is able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

SALARY The rate of pay for an hourly Natural Resources Youth Apprentice for the school year 2026 -2027 is $15.00 per hour for approximately 10 hours per week. This position will be eligible for applicable leave benefits as required by the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act and is eligible to participate in the 403b/457b retirement savings plan.
