    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Responsible for the medical direction of the chronic dialysis facility. This role will ensure that dialysis services are in accordance with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), Joint Commission, and State Department of Health treatment standards and practices. Will also ensure quality of care to all patients that utilize dialysis services.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Organize and coordinate the administrative functions of the facility, delegating duties as authorized and establishing formal means of accountability for those involved in patient care.

    Provide medical supervision of the chronic dialysis facility, including necessary training of personnel and recommendations for upgrading and maintaining equipment.

    Coordinate chronic dialysis facility functions with all other ancillary services.

    Provide medical/administrative supervision of patient care and employees to provide timely and necessary procedures consistent with the operation of the chronic dialysis facility.

    Oversee the Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement (QAQI) program in conjunction with the Clinic Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and QA/QI Director.

    Be familiar with the 2012 Medical Director Toolkit and 2013 Medical Directors Guide to Water Treatment.

    Provide ongoing appraisal of the types of services available to patients and their families, with responsibility for making recommendations for improvements to the Clinic CMO.

    Develop and participate in appropriate education programs related to chronic dialysis.

    Participate in the development and implementation of the Patient Care Policies and Procedures Manual for the facility to ensure individualized quality of care.

    Participate in monthly meetings with the Clinic Manager and Facility Administrator to discuss current issues related to the facility, staff, and patient care.

    Perform related duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

    Graduate of an approved and accepted medical school.

    Registered and in possession of a legal and unconditional license to practice medicine in the state of California. Must possess a valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number.

    Meet requirements as listed in the ESRD Interpretive Guidance Version 1.1, as it relates to the 42 CFR Part 494 Conditions for Coverage for ESRD facilities.

    Must be a board-certified physician in internal medicine or pediatrics by a professional board, have completed a board-approved training program in nephrology, and have at least 12 months of experience providing care to patients receiving dialysis.

    The nephrologist may maintain current certification in nephrology or pediatric nephrology, or current certification in internal medicine or general pediatrics. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) accepts the position of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and accepts current board certification in internal medicine, pediatrics, nephrology, or pediatric nephrology as meeting this requirement.

    Successful completion of a board-approved training program means the physician has completed a two-year nephrology fellowship, which would serve as evidence of the required 12 months of nephrology experience. CFC Reference V682-683.

    Must be sensitive and possess an awareness and keen appreciation of Indian traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs of the Indian community.

    Must be CPR certified or obtain certification within three months of hire.

    Prior experience.

    Bilingual/Spanish speaking.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Sitting / Mobility: Approximately 20% of time is spent working at a desk. Balance of time (approximately 80%) is spent moving around work areas. Communication: Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, patients and members of outside agencies, in person, by telephone, and by email. Vision: Ability to view x-ray, medical records, effectively use a computer screen and interpret printed materials, memos, and other appropriate paperwork. Lifting / Carrying: Ability to occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Stooping /  kneeling: Ability to provide patient care, access files/stock supplies in low cabinets and shelves. Reaching / Handling: Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, input information into computer systems and retrieve and work with appropriate paperwork, equipment, and supplies. Use of standard medical instruments and equipment, including x-ray. Office equipment including, but not limited to computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and fax. Work is performed in a medical office/clinic environment, with continuous contact with other staff and the public.
