Do you like to use network and Unix systems engineering to deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions? Would you like your work to play a key role in driving the stability and sustainability of next-generation IP networks?

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

The AWS Network Engineering Organization is looking for a Network Development Engineer to join our Internet Edge team. Network Development Engineers partner with our broader Infrastructure organization on configurations standards and tools, and collaborate with Systems and Software Engineers to ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products, and also deploy and sustain networking software tools.

Internet Edge is part of the broader networking team that owns and operates the external connectivity for the global AWS network. They are responsible for building and designing a complex external facing network that allows internet traffic to flow efficiently between data centers and customers. This role is focused on the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications regardless of where they are in the world.

Key job responsibilities

Network Development Engineers will:

  • Be responsible for deploying network infrastructure across all of our network fabrics that supports the Amazon Retail Service, Kindle, Payments and multiple AWS services.
  • Deploy, scale and automate our network across multiple global datacenters. This includes existing footprints and greenfield locations.
  • Drive scaling of current network designs to meet the demand of our customers.
  • Create simple, repetitive deployment processes that increase both velocity and quality.
  • Work closely with our internal customers on designs/solutions; bringing those designs/solutions from concept to production.
  • Create and update our network standards and ensure that the network is deployed to these standards.
  • Create and implement changes on the network.
  • Work closely with our automation teams in defining the tools that allow us to scale at higher volume.

A day in the life

Engineers in the Internet Edge organization have a wide range of responsibilities: we evolve routing policy, implement traffic engineering solutions, grow our peering footprint, secure the "front door" from bad actors on the Internet, and architect the hardware platforms and network design to support any Amazon product that needs to reach end-users worldwide. Our infrastructure moves terabits of traffic to and from the Internet at any given moment, and represents one of the largest edge surface areas in the world, requiring complex solutions to ensure that capacity always stays ahead of demand. To accomplish that, our engineers develop automation, write software, and work with a wide range of partner teams to continually improve and automate our Internet connectivity in areas such as capacity delivery, configuration deployment, impairment detection, and traffic optimization. Internet Edge engineers make decisions on both a day-to-day and long-term strategic basis, which carry a large amount of responsibility and impact across all of Amazon's products.

  • Support an off-hours operations escalation pager rotation.
  • Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.
  • Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
  • Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.

About the team

Internet Edge provides high-performing Internet connectivity for a wide range of use cases, such as retail (amazon.com), video streaming (Prime Video), content delivery (CloudFront), DNS (Route53), AWS services (such as EC2/S3), consumer devices (such as FireTV/Kindle/Echo), and more.

Within AWS Networking, the Internet Edge organization is responsible for connecting Amazon to the global Internet. With connections to thousands of unique external networks in hundreds of locations across the world, our mission is to deliver an Internet connectivity experience that sets the global standard for performance, availability, security, and cost, making Amazon the clear choice for our customers' needs.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
