Position Overview

The Network Engineer provides hands-on technical expertise in the installation, management, troubleshooting, and sustainment of public and private network environments. This role supports IP networks, WANs, Cisco switches and routers, servers, network-related inventory, site deployments, technical documentation, Tier III issue resolution, and customer reporting.

The Network Engineer provides guidance to the Network/Server Lead, supports infrastructure planning and implementation, participates in site surveys and installations, and helps ensure supported networks operate with maximum performance, reliability, and availability.

Key Responsibilities

Network Installation, Administration, and Troubleshooting

• Provide hands-on expertise in the installation and management of public and private networks, including IP networks, WANs, switches, Cisco routers, servers, and related network infrastructure.
• Troubleshoot servers and networks to support maximum performance and availability.
• Provide Tier III network technical issue resolution, including infrastructure-related problems and proper use of hardware.
• Support computer systems and peripherals.

Engineering, Design, and Technical Planning

• Evaluate and report on new communications technologies to enhance network capabilities.
• Identify innovative solutions to complex technical situations.
• Analyze and develop new hardware requirements.
• Prepare specifications for hardware.
• Direct and lead preparation of engineering plans and site installation Technical Design Packages.
• Develop infrastructure installation schedules.
• Assist with network installation configuration design for new sites.
• Support site decommissioning and move activities.

Site Deployment and Inventory Support

• Coordinate with internal and external teams for procurement, installation, and management of network-related inventory, including switches, routers, servers, and storage solutions.
• Travel to customer sites and perform deployment activities, including site surveys, hardware installation, software installation, hardware removal, and shipment preparation.
• Organize and direct hardware installations.
• Support site surveys.

Documentation, Reporting, and Customer Support

• Provide weekly and monthly performance reports.
• Provide daily reporting to the customer on critical issues and resolutions.
• Prepare drawings documenting network configuration changes at each site.
• Prepare site installation and trip reports.
• Respond to requests and document actions taken in a ticketing system.
• Direct and lead preparation of drawings documenting network configuration changes at each site.

Team Leadership and Training

• Provide technical expertise and guidance to team members and business partners.
• Troubleshoot complex issues.
• Conduct training sessions to ensure team members are cross-trained in supported technologies.
• Lead functional teams or projects requiring depth and breadth of technical expertise.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the Network/Server Lead.

Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent. [Required]

Experience

• 5+ years of experience in Information Technology, with a focus on network support, Cisco router and switch configurations, and LAN/WAN management. [Required]
• Hands-on experience and expertise in the installation and management of public and private networks, including IP networks, WANs, Cisco switches and routers, and server and network troubleshooting. [Required]

Skills

• Clear and effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills for updates, briefings, and interaction with coworkers, leadership, and customers.
• Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and effective decision-making.
• Customer service experience.
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 productivity applications.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Other Requirements

• Ability to travel up to 25% CONUS and/or OCONUS. [Required]

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

• Ability to physically lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to perform installation work in constrained spaces, such as under desks, in small cubicles, and in counter-window environments.
• Ability to remain in a stationary position for up to 50% of the time.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and non-verbally, to deliver updates, briefings, and interface with coworkers, leadership, and customers.
• Ability to work in an office environment and move freely within the space to use office equipment and interface with coworkers and customers.
• Ability to effectively use IT peripherals, such as laptops, desktops, printers, and fax machines.
• Ability to deliver presentations as needed.
• Ability to review, decipher, and understand program manuals, software and hardware manuals, training manuals, and related documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical networking certifications, such as CCNA, CCST, or CCNP.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree.
• Prior experience supporting network and server installation, integration, and support in a federal government enterprise environment.
• Experience contributing as part of an Agile team.
