Network Engineer

SMS is seeking a Network Engineer with an active TS clearance Network Engineer to manage mission-critical voice and data networks for our Air Force District of Washington / National Capital Region (AFNCR) contract. The Network Engineer will support mission-critical network infrastructure within a secure federal environment. This role is focused on the design, implementation, administration, troubleshooting, and sustainment of enterprise network systems. The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on experience with routing, switching, firewalls, network security, performance monitoring, and documentation while supporting highly available and secure network operations.

Job Responsibilities

• Infrastructure Support: Design, configure, and maintain LAN, WAN, routing, switching, and firewall systems.
• Specialized Systems: Engineer and maintain secure telecommunication and command-and-control systems like the Defense Red Switch Network (DRSN) within the National Military Command Center (NMCC).
• Operations & Maintenance: Monitor network health, execute upgrades, perform patching, and resolve complex latency or connectivity faults.
• Compliance: Implement DoD cybersecurity mandates, including DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and Risk Management Framework (RMF) guidelines.
• Documentation: Create architecture diagrams, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and change-management implementation plans.

Required Qualifications

• Security Clearance: Active DoD Top Secret clearance.
• Required to pass drug testing prior to start and randomly through the year
• Certifications:
  • DoD 8570 / 8140 compliance (e.g., CompTIA Security+CE baseline)
  • Active CCNA
• Bachelor's Degree
• 8 years of relevant experience
• Technical Background: Senior-level hands-on experience supporting enterprise network engineering, network operations, or infrastructure engineering in federal, defense, intelligence, or similarly secure environments.
