WHAT WE ARE SEEKING
The best candidates for this position will embody the values and beliefs at the heart of the VCP mission and vision. 

The will also meet the following qualifications and possess these preferred skills:

  • Current status as a sworn officer, state or locally authorized 

  • Demonstrated experience in community policing

    • strong preference for advanced training or certification in policing in a school setting

  • Ability to work successfully with children and adults, and sensitivity to cultural diversity.

    • experience in facilitating conferences, meetings, and similar individual and small group interactions

    • Strong preference for advanced training in de-escalating tactics

  • Ability to prioritize and schedule variable work

    • Willingness to work from multiple locations during the week as assigned 

  • Ability to learn, interpret, and explain policies and regulations

  • Strong preference for training or certification in first aid and CPR 

  • Strong preference for a criminal justice associate’s or bachelor’s degree or, minimally, some post-secondary education in the field of study

  • Willingness to engage in physical activity as circumstances warrant

  • Willingness to wear and utilize a body camera, as directed

  • Knowledge of general office practices and computer skills

  • Valid Indiana driver's license

  • Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Network Safety Officer will support the school network’s operations, particularly its goals for student safety, resolving behavioral issues, and collaborating with staff and students to answer the needs of the school’s culture by doing the following:


  • Mentorship and guidance through relationship building of students 

  • Living out school network values in all interactions with students, parents, guardians, members of the public, and fellow employees

  • Breaking up fights and arguments and assisting all parties to talk through their differences

  • Detaining or arresting students who are breaking the law regarding drugs, bringing weapons to school, or making threats to the school

  • Remanding students who commit lesser offenses to the principal or vice-principal

  • Conducting physical searches of students' property if they are suspected of breaking the law and ensuring the school administrators' safety during these searches

  • Patrolling the school grounds, ensuring overall safety, viewing videos and security monitors, and watching for strangers or suspicious activity.

  • Directing foot and auto traffic during arrival and dismissal and other events as directed

  • Giving assembly presentations on school safety, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, and online safety as assigned

  • Protecting the school and students against theft and property damage, and assisting in medical emergencies

  • Working with guidance counselors and support staff to assist students when referrals to service agencies are necessary, or to assist in conflict resolutions
