Summary

The Network Support Technician for the City's Video Management System (VMS), under the general supervision of the IT Infrastructure Division Director, is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management of the organizations video surveillance systems and supporting infrastructure. This position serves as the primary technical resource for surveillance camera deployments, system upgrades, storage management, and replacement projects. The Network Support Technician coordinates with internal departments, vendors, and contractors to ensure reliable operation of security camera systems across all facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs, configures, and maintains IP-based video surveillance cameras and related equipment
  • Oversees new camera deployments from planning through implementation
  • Performs camera replacements as part of established equipment lifecycle and replacement programs
  • Configures camera settings, recording schedules, retention policies, and system integrations
  • Monitors camera performance and proactively addresses issues affecting system reliability
  • Troubleshoots camera connectivity, image quality, recording, and performance issues
  • Maintains accurate documentation of camera locations, configurations, and system inventories
  • Oversees network infrastructure requirements for camera installations, including switching, cabling, fiber, wireless connectivity, and power requirements
  • Installs, configures, and troubleshoots network switches, Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices, and other supporting equipment
  • Works with IT and Facilities personnel to ensure adequate infrastructure is available for new deployments
  • Evaluates infrastructure needs for future expansion and recommends upgrades as necessary
  • Monitors and maintains video management system (VMS) servers and storage platforms
  • Oversees storage allocation, retention requirements, and system capacity planning
  • Facilitates server upgrades, hardware replacements, and system expansions
  • Assists with backup, disaster recovery, and system redundancy planning for surveillance systems
  • Monitors system health and performance to ensure continuous operation and compliance with retention requirements
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for surveillance system vendors and installation contractors
  • Oversees project schedules, site surveys, equipment procurement, and installation activities
  • Verifies completed installations meet organizational standards and project requirements
  • Assists with budgeting, equipment selection, and project planning for surveillance initiatives
  • Maintains vendor relationships and oversees warranty repairs and support requests
  • Performs preventative maintenance on surveillance equipment and supporting infrastructure
  • Responds to service requests and troubleshoot system issues
  • Participates in on-call support and emergency response activities as required
  • Maintains compliance with security, technology, and organizational standards
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation, procedures, and standards.
  • Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Networking, Electronics, or related field
  • Three (3) years of experience supporting IP-based video surveillance systems, network infrastructure, or security technologies, including troubleshooting hardware, software, and network connectivity issues
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, switching, routing, VLANs, and PoE

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Milestone
  • Experience supporting large-scale surveillance environments
  • Knowledge of server and storage technologies
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Security+, or manufacturer-specific surveillance certifications.
  • Experience coordinating contractors and managing technology projects

Certifications and Licenses

  • Valid driver's license
