    General Purpose of Job:

    Responsible for organizing and managing patients of Neurosurgery utilizing Sparrow Hospital under the clinical guidance and supervision of the neurosurgeons. Will also provide knowledgeable, first assistance to physicians performing surgical procedures. S/he will assure efficiency day-to-day operations of the service, allowing the neurosurgeons to utilize the time spend in the hospital in an efficient manner.

    Essential Duties:

    This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

    • Manage, develop, implement and evaluate overall postoperative patient plan of care in collaboration with attending physician and the health team utilizing daily rounds as a means of determining effective utilization of resources and outcome achievement.
    • Assures accurate and timely history and physical, including completion of patient chart, internal admission notes, consults, daily progress notes, and discharge summaries on neurosurgery patients.
    • Collects and ensures appropriate follow-up of laboratory, pathology, radiology, and other reports.
    • Communicates with the neurosurgeons, nursing staff, residents and other members of the medical team throughout the day to keep them appraised of any changes in patient's status. Solves patient problems within the limits of knowledge and experience and under the direct supervision of the neurosurgeons.
    • Performs ED triage activities for neurosurgeons.
    • Performs clinical duties as required for neurosurgery patients.
    • Works in collaboration with health care team in planning and coordinating care of neurosurgery patients.
    • Attends pertinent conference through the week including patient presentations as the opportunity arises.
    • Assures continuity of neurosurgery patient care.
    • Maintains up-to-date surgical skills with the help of CME and personal ongoing training.
    • Serves as a liaison/preceptor for residents on neurosurgery services.

    Job Requirements

    General Requirements • Certificate and licensure by appropriate organizations. • State of Michigan Certification as a Physician's Assistant. Work Experience • Minimum of 2 years experience in neurosurgery procedures including general neurosurgery cases. • Minimum of 2 years experience with neurosurgery and or emergency services Education • Graduate of an approved Physician's Assistant Program. Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Demonstrates communication skills, including ability to interact with diverse group of people. • Ability to handle multiple job responsibilities at once· • Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care might be gained through education, training or experience.
