The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our dynamic and fast-paced Neurosurgery team. This is a unique opportunity to practice at a leading academic medical center and contribute to advanced, life-saving care in collaboration with nationally recognized experts.
About the Role:
As a Neurosurgery NP at UMMC, you will play a critical role in providing comprehensive care for neurosurgical patients across the continuum—from evaluation and acute management to post-operative care. You will work closely with attending neurosurgeons, residents, and interdisciplinary teams in a high-acuity environment.
This role is based at UMMC and does not currently include formal cross-coverage with Shock Trauma.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage inpatient neurosurgical patients in collaboration with physicians and care teams
- Perform comprehensive neurological assessments and post-operative management
- First assist in surgical procedures (based on privileging)
- Coordinate care for complex neurosurgical patients
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and treatment planning
- Provide education and support to patients and families
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (AGACNP preferred)
- Active Maryland NP license and DEA (or eligibility)
- Board certification as a Nurse Practitioner
- Strong clinical background in acute care, ICU, neurology, or neurosurgery preferred
- Excellent critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills
Preferred Experience:
- Prior neurosurgery, neurology, or surgical subspecialty experience
- Exposure to high-acuity inpatient or ICU environments
- Academic medical center experience preferred
- Ability to manage complex and rapidly changing clinical situations
