Position Title New Student Programs Peer Mentor Academic Year 2026-2027 UIW Mission

Position Summary
The New Student Programs (NSP) Peer Mentor is an upper-level student (1+ years completed as a post-high school college student) who assists in mentoring first-year in college and transfer students to acclimate themselves to the university setting. The NSP Peer Mentor helps connect new students with university resources, initiates social and academic opportunities, and helps provide a holistic experience for first-year and transfer students. The New Student Programs (NSP) Peer Mentor reports to the Director of New Student Programs.
Essential Functions
Peer Mentorship:
- Provides mentorship to students in academic and college skill-building, navigating classes and accessing university resources.
- Meets with mentees to connect and guide them through their first year at UIW.
- Serves as a role model for first-year and transfer students by encouraging and modeling a successful balance of academic and college life, actively participating in classes and campus activities, maintaining a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), and being an active member of the UIW community.
Community Development:
- Maintains a strong presence in the NSP student lounge by maintaining office hours (10-12 hours per week), facilitating events, and being available during high-need periods such as class registration and finals.
- Takes the initiative to get to know visitors to the NSP lounge and events by engaging in conversation and encouraging participation in activities.
- Maintains a visible role on campus and is available and approachable to students.
- Assists in planning and coordinating purposeful NSP programs and activities for students.
Other Duties:
- Attends and participates in peer mentor training and meetings organized by the Director of New Student Programs.
- Maintains frequent communication with other peer mentors, Director of New Student Programs (NSP), the NSP Graduate Assistant, and other office staff.
- Participates in Fall and Spring Commencement ceremonies.
- Assists the Director of New Student Programs with events related to the UIW Parent and Family Association.
Qualifications
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Intermediate skills in Canva and different social media platforms.
- Ability to learn and enact specific policies and procedures associated with the Office of New Student Programs.
- Ability to work in a team-driven environment.
- Intermediate data entry skills to maintain records, including tracking visitors to the NSP lounge and events.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
- Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education
- Current upper level student (1+ years completed as a post-high school college student).
- Minimum 3.0 GPA requirement.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in high volume customer service environment.
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
None.
Work Hours
- Monday - Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., up to 15 hours a week.
- Evening and weekend hours may be scheduled due to NSP program and event commitments.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs., stand, bend, and reach to perform various tasks as needed.
- Must be able to navigate campus.

About Company
One of the leading comprehensive universities in Texas, the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio strives to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens with values developed in a Judeo-Christian tradition. In 1881 the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word founded Incarnate Word College as a center of higher education for young women. The college was admitted to membership in the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1919, and joined the Texas Association of Colleges as a senior college in 1920. The Graduate Studies division was established in 1950. Male students were first admitted into the college's undergraduate programs in 1970. Incarnate Word College became the University of the Incarnate Word in 1996. Today, UIW is a Hispanic-Serving Institution under federal guidelines.
UIW is the largest Catholic university in Texas and the fourth-largest private university in the state. The enrollment reflects the diversity of South Texas, as more than 60 percent of the students are from racial or ethnic minority groups. UIW is ranked No. 1 nationally among faith-based universities in the conferring of bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics by the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine, and No. 6 nationally among all private, not-for-profit universities. International students comprise 14% of the student body, and they represent over 70 countries. Seventy-five percent of the students depend upon financial aid. A majority of the students are first-generation college attendees.
UIW offers 80 undergraduate and graduate fields of study, including the Ph.D. in Education and doctoral degrees in pharmacy (Pharm.D.), optometry (OD), nursing practice (DNP), physical therapy (DPT) and business administration (DBA). UIW is one of twenty universities in the U.S. with an optometry program, while the pharmacy school is the only one in Texas at a private university. In athletics, UIW is a member of the Division 1 Southland Conference. UIW fielded its first football team in 2009, which plays in Benson Stadium, named after New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson.
With a student-to-faculty classroom ratio of 14:1, UIW is a wireless campus that provides students with an environment that encourages excellence in academics. As part of its international efforts, UIW has agreements for reciprocal education with 123 universities in 40 countries. It also operates academic sites in Mexico City and Irapuato, Mexico, and Heidelberg, Germany.
