As a Lead Mechanic, you will utilize your master-level expertise in diagnostics, heavy-duty repairs, and preventative maintenance on our advanced fleet of Diesel and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles. Your mission is to ensure GFL’s fleet remains in safe, compliant, and continuous "road ready" condition, while providing leadership and technical mentorship to the night-shift shop crew.
Advanced Diagnostics & Repair: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex issues on Diesel and CNG-powered heavy trucks, including engines, electrical multiplex systems, hydraulics, and fuel/propane delivery systems.
Fleet Inspections: Independently lead comprehensive DOT and brake inspections, evaluating emission systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other critical components.
Leadership & Mentorship: Act as the shop floor leader during the night shift; provide guidance, technical troubleshooting assistance, and mentorship to Level B and C mechanics.
Shop Efficiency: Oversee mechanical write-ups on equipment, prioritize incoming repairs to maximize shop efficiency, and coordinate the nightly repair schedule.
Data & Documentation: Efficiently complete daily work orders, order necessary parts, and maintain accurate digital reports via our fleet management software.
Schematic Mastery: Seamlessly read, interpret, and apply intricate electrical, hydraulic, and diagnostic schematics.
Safety Champion: Maintain a clean, organized work area and strictly enforce compliance with OSHA, DOT, and internal safety regulations.
Experience: 5+ years of heavy-duty diesel and/or CNG maintenance experience.
Technical Certifications: * Brake Safety Certificate (Required)
Section 609 A/C Universal Technician Certification (Required)
ASE Certifications (Highly Preferred / Company paid if obtained post-hire)
License: Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred, or the willingness and ability to obtain one within six (6) months of employment (we will help you get it!).
Tech Savvy: Proficient with modern diagnostic software and computer-literate enough to learn internal fleet management systems.
Regulatory Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and related state/federal safety regulations.
Communication: Ability to read and interpret complex manuals, and communicate effectively with shop leadership, vendors, and team members.
Ability to stand, walk, crouch, crawl, and kneel for extended periods inside, outside, and under heavy equipment.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and push/pull up to 100 pounds.
Excellent visual acuity (including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision) to interpret diagnostic screens and intricate wiring.
Continuous concentrated mental and visual attention required to safely diagnose complex mechanical issues.
