Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
The Phlebotomist collects blood and other specimens from patients of all ages, including pediatric and neonatal patients, using venipuncture and capillary techniques. This role is responsible for accurately packaging and processing specimens for laboratory testing, reviewing test orders, and supporting additional laboratory procedures as needed. The Phlebotomist also promotes compliance and safety standards and may assist in orienting and training patient service technicians.
Responsibilities
- Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients across all age groups, including infants, children, and adults.
- Perform pediatric blood collections and difficult draws, including patients in medical office buildings and inpatient hospital settings.
- Review and verify test orders for accuracy and completeness before specimen collection.
- Draw and label samples accurately, ensuring proper patient identification and documentation.
- Process specimens for laboratory testing, including preparing, packaging, and routing samples according to established protocols.
- Work with pediatric patients under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead, following all safety and care guidelines.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety regulations and communicate their importance to other employees.
- Provide orientation and training support to patient service technicians as needed.
- Use laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar systems) to enter, track, and manage specimen data.
- Deliver professional and courteous customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff.
- Manage a high patient volume in an inpatient hospital setting, including drawing 20-30 patients within a single shift.
- Perform phlebotomy duties on a psychiatric unit, including drawing psych patients while maintaining safety and professionalism.
- Assist with specimen processing tasks in the laboratory when required.
- Follow all hospital, laboratory, and regulatory policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Participate in training and acclimation activities to learn facility workflows and expectations.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients of all age groups.
- Demonstrated experience with pediatric blood collections, including infant and neonatal draws.
- Ability to perform difficult draws, including patients in medical office buildings and inpatient hospital units.
- Comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety practices in a clinical laboratory and patient care environment.
- Strong communication skills to effectively explain and reinforce compliance and safety standards to colleagues.
- Ability to provide orientation and training support for patient service technicians.
- High school diploma (HS Diploma).
- Current CPT-1 license.
- Computer proficiency, including experience with a laboratory information system (for example, Cerner or similar).
- Customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally with patients and clinical staff.
- At least six months of experience in an acute or sub-acute hospital setting, with a preference for one year of experience.
- Experience with pediatric patients in an inpatient or hospital setting.
- Ability to draw 20-30 patients during a single shift in an inpatient hospital environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in an inpatient hospital setting, including working with pediatric and neonatal patients.
- Comfort working with psych patients and drawing blood on a psychiatric unit.
- Familiarity with common laboratory workflows, including specimen processing and routing.
- Ability to adapt quickly to different units and patient populations as part of a float pool.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and data entry.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with laboratory and clinical teams.
Work Environment
This role is based in an inpatient hospital environment, working as part of a registry float pool to provide coverage for paid time off and vacations. The Phlebotomist works primarily on the NOC (night) shift from 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with a requirement to work rotating weekends and holidays. The position involves drawing blood from a wide range of patients, including pediatric, neonatal, and psych patients, and includes work on a psychiatric unit. The work setting is fast-paced, with an expectation to draw 20-30 patients per shift, and uses laboratory information systems such as Cerner or similar platforms. Initial training consists of full-time hours to help the phlebotomist acclimate to the facility, including several shifts on the morning shift before transitioning to the night schedule. The environment emphasizes safety, compliance, and professional conduct, with potential opportunities to assist in specimen processing and other laboratory tasks.

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
