What Does a Driver/Helper Do Anyway?
- Safely maneuver a 24-foor box truck through residential streets and tight locations
- Complete pre-trip and post trip inspections
- Receive donations from donors at home pickups or box locations
- Return to the store and unload all the donations
- Sort, stack and process donations by category
- Safely transport materials to and from work area using hand trucks, pallet jacks, other lifting devices and/or employee assistance
- Share information about our charity partners and our mission with our donors

Position Title: Non-CDL Donation Collection Helper
Reports To: Manager II
Department: Transportation
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY
The Team Member - Transportation supports the safe and efficient collection, transportation, and handling of donated goods throughout assigned routes. Working alongside the Driver, this position assists with residential and donation-site pickups, loading and unloading donations, route navigation, and maintaining clean and organized collection sites. The Team Member - Transportation regularly handles large, bulky, and irregularly shaped items and plays an important role in ensuring donations are collected safely and efficiently. As a frontline representative of America's Thrift Stores, the Team Member - Transportation provides exceptional service to donors and community members while promoting the organization's mission and maintaining positive relationships throughout the communities we serve. This position requires a strong work ethic, teamwork, attention to safety, and the ability to perform physically demanding work in a fast-paced environment and varying weather conditions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Driver with collecting donations from box sites and donor homes.
- Deliver exceptional customer service to donors and customers.
- Support the Driver with navigation during routes and pick-up operations.
- Effectively communicate our mission and goals to donors and customers.
- Foster and maintain positive relationships with donors and the public.
- Contribute to the upkeep and management of donation box sites and routes.
- Collaborate with the Driver on route development and placement of donation boxes and trailers.
- Ensure donation sites and routes are clean and organized according to company standards.
- Help the Driver with accurate record-keeping and tracking of routes and donations.
- Work with the Driver to safely and efficiently load and unload trucks and trailers.
- Adapt to working in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and wet environments.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Strong customer service skills are essential.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with team members.
- Proficient in maintaining accurate records and communicating donation progress.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 70 pounds, independently or with assistance as appropriate, including large, bulky, or irregularly shaped donated items.
- Ability to push and pull items weighing up to 70 pounds, including donations, carts, containers, and other materials used during collection and transportation activities.
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods on a variety of surfaces, including concrete, pavement, uneven ground, ramps, and residential or commercial properties.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, reach at waist and overhead levels, and perform repetitive physical movements while collecting, loading, and unloading donations.
- Must be able to safely climb steps, stairs, ramps, and into and out of box trucks and trailers throughout the workday.
- Ability to maintain balance while loading, unloading, carrying, and maneuvering donations in and around trucks, trailers, donation sites, and donor locations.
- Must possess sufficient hand and arm strength, grip, and dexterity to grasp, handle, carry, position, and secure donated goods.
- Ability to safely load, unload, move, and position furniture, household goods, bags, boxes, and other donations of varying sizes, shapes, and weights.
- Must be able to perform physically demanding work throughout the shift, including repeated lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving of donated merchandise.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying environmental and weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and wet conditions.
- Must have sufficient vision, hearing, and communication abilities to safely perform job duties, communicate with the Driver, donors, customers, and team members, and remain aware of vehicles, equipment, and surrounding hazards.
- Ability to safely perform physical duties in and around moving vehicles, donation boxes, trailers, loading areas, parking lots, residential locations, and other collection sites.
- Must be able to tolerate regular travel in a box truck and remain seated for periods of time while traveling between donation and collection locations.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
