The Residential Driver will be responsible for safely, efficiently, and courteously providing waste removal services to customers. The driver will collect solid waste or recyclables on curbside and/or backdoor routes and transporting to post-collection facilities.

Position Summary

The Residential Driver is responsible for safely operating side-load and/or rear-load collection vehicles to service residential and recycling routes. This role plays a critical part in maintaining route efficiency, customer satisfaction, and safety while representing GFL professionally in the community.

Key Responsibilities
Route & Vehicle Operations
  • Operate residential and recycling collection vehicles and hydraulic equipment on assigned routes
  • Load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into collection vehicles
  • Operate compaction equipment to maximize vehicle capacity
  • Use proper driving techniques to prevent driver-induced mechanical issues
Safety & Compliance
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections, Safety Lane reports, route sheets, and daily truck documentation
  • Report mechanical issues, accidents, or incidents to supervisors immediately
  • Follow all federal, state, local, and company safety policies and procedures
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
Customer Service & Route Quality
  • Maintain route quality standards established by management
  • Identify and tag prohibited waste materials and remove items when required
  • Provide professional, courteous service to customers and the general public
  • Maintain accurate service records
Teamwork & Efficiency
  • Manage assigned helper(s), when applicable
  • Maintain a clean vehicle, including interior and exterior
  • Assist with container and cart inventory and recommend replacements or additions
  • Work closely with supervisors to improve route efficiency
  • Attend safety meetings, training sessions, and branch meetings
  • Work overtime as required
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of commercial driving experience
  • Ability to safely operate collection vehicles and related equipment
  • Must meet all safety-sensitive job requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of collection vehicles and basic maintenance requirements
  • Ability to maneuver large vehicles in tight spaces and heavy traffic
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable or hazardous waste
  • Strong communication skills with customers and internal teams
  • Ability to read, write, and follow route documents and maps
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing routes or schedules
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 lbs repetitively using proper lifting techniques
  • Commitment to safety and continuous improvement
Physical & Working Conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, and use hands and fingers
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while driving (up to 75% of the workday)
  • Visual acuity including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, vibration, traffic, moving mechanical parts, fumes, and chemicals
  • Work performed outdoors up to 100% of the time
  • Noise levels are usually loud
