Primary Purpose:

The Transportation Dispatcher serves as a key member of the Sheldon ISD Transportation Team and is responsible for supporting daily transportation operations through effective communication, dispatching, routing support, customer service, and coordination of transportation services. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the department fulfills its mission of providing safe, courteous, efficient, and responsive transportation services to the Sheldon ISD community.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma or GED

Valid Texas Driver's License

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Strong computer and technology skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

Bilingual (English/Spanish) (preferred)

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.

Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Ability to prioritize competing demands and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Proficiency with transportation software systems, routing applications, and Microsoft Office programs.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Experience

Experience in school transportation operations

Experience with transportation routing, dispatch, and communication software

Experience working with radio communications systems

Experience with field trip management software

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Operational Support

  • Monitor and coordinate daily transportation operations.
  • Dispatch buses, white fleet vehicles, and transportation personnel as needed.
  • Maintain effective radio communication with drivers and transportation staff.
  • Monitor route performance and communicate operational concerns to leadership.
  • Assist with emergency response and transportation incidents as directed.
  • Support routing adjustments and transportation planning efforts.
  • Coordinate transportation coverage for route shortages, special programs, and extracurricular activities.

Customer Service

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for parents, students, campuses, and district staff.
  • Operate the transportation phone bank and respond professionally to inquiries and concerns.
  • Provide timely and accurate information regarding transportation services.
  • Resolve transportation-related concerns while maintaining a positive and customer-focused approach.

Technology and Systems

  • Utilize transportation routing software, dispatch systems, communication platforms, GPS systems, and field trip management software.
  • Monitor multiple computer screens and systems simultaneously.
  • Maintain accurate transportation records and operational documentation.
  • Assist with data entry, reporting, and information management.

Teamwork and Department Culture

  • Work collaboratively with drivers, attendants, mechanics, dispatchers, specialists, campus personnel, and district leadership.
  • Seek opportunities to improve processes, strengthen teamwork, and support department goals.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and positive attitude in all interactions.

Other

  • May be required to operate district white fleet vehicles to transport students or staff as operational needs arise.
  • Attend training and professional development opportunities as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of Transportation.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Physical Requirements

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and use of computer equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively via telephone and two-way radio.

Ability to work extended hours when necessary to support transportation operations.

Environment: constant communication with drivers, parents, campuses, and district personnel. The position may require flexibility in work hours during special events, emergencies, weather events, and operational needs.

  • Minimum Salary $14.46
  • Salary is commensurate with experience
  • Works 226 Day Calendar
  • Please note that this role requires in-person attendance and is not eligible for remote work.
