Position Title: Nonpublic High School Driver Education Teacher

Reports To: Education Associate, Driver's Education

Description of Position: The Nonpublic High School Driver Education position is responsible teaching driver education to nonpublic high school students at their private school location(s). This position is responsible for instructing a Driver Education 44-hour course with two components. The first component is a 30-hour classroom experience. The second component consists of 7 hours of Behind the Wheel instruction and 7 hours of observation for each student enrolled in the course.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Teach driver education to assigned students enrolled in nonpublic high school(s) to include 37.5 hours a week (188 days) of classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction.
  • Submit weekly class and driving schedules to the Education Associate for Driver Education.
  • Maintain behind-the-wheel driving logs for each student.
  • Maintain and submit end-of-year final grade reports.
  • Attend required regular staff meetings.
  • Engage in professional interactions with students, parents, and school staff members including reasonable accommodations to his or her daily schedule and/or routines in order ensure effective and efficient driver education program service to the high school/academy.

Essential Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Hold a valid Standard Certificate as a Driver Education and Traffic Safety Education Teacher; or have an application for driver's education certification on file in DEEDS.

Experience:

  • Experience in mentoring, teaching or leading youth in a school or community setting.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • The applicant's driving record shall not have more than five (5) points at the time of application.
  • The applicant's driver's license shall not have been suspended, revoked, or disqualified in Delaware or any other jurisdiction for moving violations in the last five years and shall remain valid for the duration of the applicant's employment under this standard certificate.

  • Must be proficient in performing responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Must be skilled in setting priorities, working under pressure, and working in collaboration with others.
  • Must be able to proactively solve problems with professionalism.
  • Must be proficient with email, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with staff in a tactful, congenial, and personal manner.

Salary:

Salary Range: $53,521.43 - $98,058.57 annually. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate's education and experience in accordance with the Department of Education's compensation policy. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, participation in the state retirement program, annual, sick, and personal leave, and supplemental benefits options. Direct deposit of payroll checks is a condition of state employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made after approximately one month of employment.
