Basic Job Functions:
Shift: Third Shift
Department: Galvanizing
The Chemical Room Operator for the Galvanizing Department is responsible for operating and monitoring the acid recovery system and flux press equipment. This role supports daily operations by maintaining tank levels, monitoring process conditions, and preparing byproduct shipments. The position plays a critical role in supporting the plant’s operational objectives through process optimization, environmental compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Additionally, the Chemical Room Operator ensures compliance with safety standards, oversees chemical storage and boiler/chiller systems, and assists with the training and development of teammates within the department.
- Operate the acid recovery system efficiently to keep acid tanks at appropriate levels
- Operate flux press as needed
- Assist in loading the MZR for zinc recovery
- Prepare byproduct shipments
- Work with 1st shift to ensure adequate turnover in pickle tank conditions and levels
- Obtain HAZWOPER certification and maintain good standing on HazMat team
- Maintain accurate documentation for production reporting, time tracking, and environmental recordkeeping.
- Support new employee onboarding and safety training within the department.
- Lead or participate in Safety Leadership Team meetings and improvement initiatives.
- Maintain safe and clean working conditions and enforce proper use of PPE at all times.
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment; chemical processing, water treatment, galvanizing, or related experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, environmental compliance requirements, and safe chemical handling practices.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow operating procedures, safety policies, and environmental documentation.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications and electronic recordkeeping systems.
- Ability to wear required PPE and work safely around industrial chemicals and process equipment.
Preferences:
- Experience with acid recovery systems, water treatment systems, or chemical processing operations.
- Experience in a galvanizing or metals manufacturing environment.
- Prior HazMat, emergency response, or HAZWOPER experience.
- Experience with environmental reporting and regulatory compliance.
