ResponsibilitiesGuide and exercise technical control over shipyard work to ensure the safety and economy of the submarine propulsion plant.Carry out a continuing review of engineering and production work to ensure the requirements for control of the nuclear propulsion plant are met.Provide engineering support to the supply program for the procurement, inspection, and acceptance of critical nuclear reactor plant equipment and materials.Perform advance technical planning functions necessary to prepare the shipyard for forthcoming availabilities and overhaul work on the propulsion plants of nuclear‑powered submarines.Review drawings related to the nuclear propulsion plant for technical adequacy and interpret engineering tasks to personnel.Conditions of EmploymentMust be a U.S. Citizen.Must be determined suitable for federal employment.Must participate in the direct‑deposit pay program.New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement is subject to federal regulations.Males born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.Must successfully complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.Must obtain and maintain an interim or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.Must wear personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes) continuously for the duration of the work shift.Position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites, and may require travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.QualificationsGS‑12: One year of specialized experience at the GS‑11 level or equivalent, as a professional engineer applying nuclear engineering methods to resolve technical problems for submarine nuclear propulsion system maintenance operations.GS‑11: One year of specialized experience at the GS‑09 level or equivalent, as a professional engineer applying nuclear engineering methods to control or test critical equipment and materials for submarine nuclear propulsion system maintenance operations.EducationSuccessful completion of a professional engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited program or a program that includes required calculus and engineering science courses.Or current registration as Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any state, D.C., Guam, or Puerto Rico.Or evidence of having passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.Or completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and engineering, equivalent to a bachelor's degree in engineering.Or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, computer science) with at least one year of professional engineering experience under supervision.Gs‑11 OnlyIn lieu of specialized experience, qualification may be achieved with a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three years of progressively higher graduate education leading to a Ph.D., or a combination of education and experience equaling one year of experience.This position may require working an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements.
