Job DescriptionWe have an opening for a Nuclear Facility Senior Electrical Project Engineer to provide engineering support for new construction, upgrades to electrical facility systems, and modifications to laboratory facilities. The role involves design, development, fabrication, integration, testing, and fielding of facility projects and upgrades. Applicants will work on significant R&D projects and will apply advanced technical knowledge in electrical engineering to transform conceptual ideas into cost‑effective solutions that maintain facilities and support research involving nuclear materials.This position reports programmatically to the Facility Projects Manager in the Superblock and is part of the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) within the Engineering Directorate.Full‑time on‑site presence is required.ResponsibilitiesIndependently prepare and implement complex electrical designs requiring in‑depth analysis, ingenuity, and creativity using design criteria, calculations, schematics, sketches, construction documents, procedures, and specifications.Utilize advanced technical engineering skills and complex electrical system experience to develop detailed designs, drawings, calculations, bills of materials, budgets, presentations, schedules, and work‑planning documentation. Support facility improvement projects and activities, evaluate system capacities, plan sequencing, and ensure constructability.Support significant R&D projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and innovation to create mechanical solutions that are safe and compliant with DOE orders and specifications.Determine functional requirements for electrical systems in a hazard category2 nuclear facility for new or modified specialized equipment and support systems and perform advanced electrical engineering calculations.Write and communicate clear, concise requirements using in‑depth analysis and ingenuity.Lead complex internal electrical system projects, develop technical criteria, schedules, and deliverables, and direct the work of electrical design drafters.Participate in design reviews to obtain approvals of project scope and designs.Provide technical input on complex design requirements, evaluate potential system impacts for projects affecting facility systems, and comply with LLNL procedures, work control system processes, and DOE requirements.Guide the successful completion of projects, provide regular status updates to stakeholders, and identify and develop workarounds to project obstacles.Generate detailed plans, schedules, and budgets for project activities.Perform other duties as assigned.Additional Responsibilities (SES.4 Level)Lead highly complex internal multi‑disciplinary engineering projects as the Project Lead or Design Manager, with overall responsibility for technical criteria, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.Develop, implement, and provide highly advanced engineering solutions and technical analysis to resolve highly complex technical issues.Provide project planning and project management knowledge for significant R&D projects while ensuring compliance with DOE orders and specifications.Collaborate with senior stakeholders, management, and DOE personnel to manage and execute the portfolio of facility projects, serving as the primary technical resource and influencing strategic technical advice.Participate in the planning, development, implementation, and refinement of broad project vision and strategy, influencing technical direction for the projects and the team.Develop new ideas, modify approaches, and/or redefine customer requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.Provide expert‑level capability in the design and analysis of highly complex electrical systems.Provide highly advanced technical guidance and mentorship to technical staff, fostering their development and supporting growth within the team.QualificationsAbility to secure and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q‑level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Experience with and advanced knowledge in the design of facility‑related electrical systems and components such as ventilation systems, fire protection systems, liquid nitrogen or argon systems, chilled water systems, or boiler systems.Experience developing electrical project scope, evaluating design options, determining design criteria, and preparing and reviewing design and construction specifications, calculations, and drawings for industrial facility environments.Advanced proficiency with applicable codes and industry standards (IEEE, ASME, California Building Code, Uniform Building Code, ASHRAE).Advanced verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction and collaboration in a team environment, including presenting and explaining technical information to managers, reviewers, and stakeholders.Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, oversee, and deliver multiple projects on budget and schedule, often with conflicting work requirements and prioritization toward long‑range targets.Additional Qualifications (SES.4 Level)Subject‑matter expertise and significant experience in facility electrical engineering and industry code compliance.Experience leading and motivating teams to achieve project objectives that include solving highly complex problems, defining and verifying requirements and resources, and applying project management expertise.Experience and advanced skills in project management, budgeting, scheduling, and project tracking.Expert knowledge of various project delivery tools, methods, and contract forms (design‑build, design‑bid‑build).Expert communication, facilitation, collaboration, interpersonal, and negotiation skills for presenting strategic technical advice and influencing senior management and external stakeholders.Experience translating highly complex requirements into hardware and software specifications and interpreting mechanical, electrical, and electro‑optical specifications using drawings, datasheets, and manuals.Desired QualificationsMaster's degree in electrical engineering or a related field.Professional Engineering registration in electrical engineering in California or reciprocity from another state within twelve months.Significant experience performing design work for electrical systems in an architectural engineering (AE) consulting environment.Experience with control systems and/or control‑room design.Extensive knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA70E, and other applicable electrical codes/standards (IEEE, UL).Experience with medium and low voltage power distribution systems, backup/emergency power systems, and facility electrical infrastructure.Ability to perform load calculations, short‑circuit analysis, and arc‑flash evaluations.Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Creo).Proficiency in power system analysis, fault
