Nuclear Island Major Maintenance Equipment Mechanical Design Engineer

Pay rate range $52-86 an hour

Responsibilities

• Design of nuclear fuel handling equipment, and fuel handling components from requirements development through final design, manufacturing and commissioning.
• Provide a wide range of support for the design of fuel handling equipment.
• Complete designs of equipment, processes and components by applying engineering and scientific principles.
• Complete design through calculations, developing drawings, using and writing software and commercially available engineering tools.
• Follow engineering procedures to conduct and document design work.
• Write technical reports detailing the design work.
• Coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts as needed.
• Present results of design reviews.
• Oversee and lead technical areas within projects, such as equipment owner or system lead.
• Identify and ensure application of correct design codes into plant system designs such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc.
• Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers regarding nuclear and non-nuclear design standards.
• Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system designs.
• Interface with the design team to create and manage drawing packages, including P&ID's, 3D models, system interface drawings, assembly and detailed design drawings.
• Coordinate with design disciplines to develop plant design information and specify system performance criteria.
• Provide technical oversight of supplier projects, ensuring deliverables meet specifications and conducting technical reviews.
• Establish and maintain system requirements and specifications, such as Engineering Design Specifications for major equipment.
• Propose and initiate testing programs for plant system qualification.
• Support and oversee testing, evaluate results, and report findings.
• Generate design packages, including calculations, reports, mechanical drawings, and specifications.
• Review technical design documents like Design Basis Documents and Interface Control Documents.
• Support licensing activities related to Safety Analysis Reports.
• Assist in design reviews during plant system and subsystem development.

Requirements

• B.S. in Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university
• 6+ years of proven mechanical system design and operations experience
• Experience in designing and operating complex mechanical systems, structures, and equipment, particularly nuclear fuel handling systems
• Previous experience with nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel handling or nuclear maintenance process systems
• Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
• Current or previously qualified nuclear plant operator (EOOW, SRO, STE, or similar) is highly desired
• Experience with radiological controls at nuclear power plants is highly desired
• Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence
• Self-starter with minimal supervision and ability to contribute to a design team
• Ability to handle multiple projects with conflicting objectives and resolve conflicts effectively
• Experience working within quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001
