GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Responsible for teaching high school students Nurse Aide coursework using the Virginia Board of Nursing curriculum. Supervise, instruct, and guide students in a classroom and clinical setting. The Nurse Aide Instructor will function within the policies and practices of the New Horizons Regional Education Centers, Virginia Board of Nursing, and the cooperating clinical agencies. Responsible for developing and planning instruction to meet diverse student population needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensure that course objectives (Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide/Patient Care Technician) are met.
- Teaching and evaluation of students and shall not assume other duties while instructing or supervising students.
- Participate in the planning of each learning experience.
- Evaluates student performance and growth in knowledge and understandings and prepares regular progress reports.
- Conferences regularly with parents/guardians regarding behavior observations and the performance of students.
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Maintains thorough records for each student as required Virginia Board of Nursing subsection A of 18VAC90-26-50.
- Perform other activities necessary to comply with Virginia Board of Nursing subsection B of 18VAC90-26-20.
- Ensure that students do not perform services for which they have not received instruction and been found proficient.
- Selects, requisitions, and maintains books, instructional materials, electronics equipment, and instructional aids.
- Attends staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
- Under the direct onsite supervision of the primary instructor, the program may use other persons who have expertise in specific topics and have had at least one year of experience in the field.
- When students are giving direct care to clients in clinical areas, instructional personnel must be on site solely to supervise the students.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the principal, program administrator or other appropriate administrator.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Must hold a current, unrestricted Virginia license or a multistate licensure privilege as a Registered Nurse. Bachelor of Science in Nursing - with interest in further education. Must maintain professional certification according to Virginia Recertification Regulations. Ability to effectively supervise student nurses in the clinical practicum and in the classroom.
- Two years of experience as a registered nurse within the previous five years and at least one year of direct client care or supervisory experience in the provision of geriatric long-term care services. Other experience may include employment in a nurse aide program or employment in or supervision of nursing students in a nursing facility or unit, geriatrics department, chronic care hospital, home care, or other long-term care setting.
Satisfactory completion of at least 12 hours of coursework that includes:
- Basic principles of adult learning
- Teaching methods and tools for adult learners
- Evaluation strategies and measurement tools for assessing student learning outcomes
- Review of current regulations for nurse aide education programs
- Review of the board-approved nurse aide curriculum content
- Review of the skills evaluated on the board-approved nurse aide certification examination
Complete a refresher course every three years that includes a review of regulations for nurse aides and nurse aide education programs and the skills evaluated on the board-approved nurse aide certification examination.
Must obtain the AHA BLS Instructor Certification within 90 days of hire
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Must qualify for a Virginia Teaching Certificate
