THE POSITION

As a Nurse Aide with the Department of Corrections, you will take part in mission-driven care that supports both health and safety at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Laurel Highlands. This position offers steady teamwork, practical skill building, and a strong sense of purpose. You will help ensure that inmates receive attentive care and support throughout their daily routines. Your work will contribute to a safe, organized, and respectful environment.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position provides daily care and support to inmates by following individualized care plans and maintaining a safe and clean environment. The work includes assisting with personal care, monitoring health needs, and supporting the healthcare team. As a Nurse Aide, you will perform the following duties:

  • Health Monitoring: Check and record vital signs and observe habits, behaviors, and physical changes
  • Personal Care: Assist inmates with bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, and mobility needs
  • Safety Support: Follow infection control rules, maintain clean work areas, and report hazards or concerns
  • Record Keeping: Document care activities, update electronic health records, and share information with staff
  • Equipment Handling: Sterilize supplies, manage inventory, and use approved tools for daily tasks
  • Unit Assistance: Support team activities, attend required trainings, and assist with related duties as assigned

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • The Department of Corrections is staffed by three work shifts that cover the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Eight-hour shifts include 1st shift (6:00 AM to 2:30 PM), 2nd shift (2:00 PM to 10:30 PM), and 3rd shift (10:00 PM to 6:30 AM), with rotating days off and a 30-minute lunch.
  • Work schedules are to be determined at the time of hire.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Active registration as a Nurse Aide in the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry; or
  • Six months of paid experience in the care and treatment of geriatric or physically ill patients or residents.

Special Requirement:

  • This position is assigned to a long-term or specialized care facility and requires active registration as a Nurse Aide in the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
