General Summary
The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive medical and nursing care to individuals residing in the Kalamazoo County Jail, a 24-hour secure criminal justice facility. Nursing services are delivered using the established nursing process, including assessment, planning, implementation, intervention, and evaluation, in accordance with applicable state jail standards, all relevant laws and regulations, and under the direction of the Sheriffs Office contracted physician.
Collaboration with Interdisciplinary Partners
This position collaborates with interdisciplinary partners, including mental health providers, contracted physicians, local hospitals, and pharmacies, to ensure continuity of care, maintain security and safety standards, and deliver effective patient-centered treatment in accordance with accepted best practices.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assesses, evaluates, and treats medical concerns and conditions of residents.
- Administers medications on a regular basis.
- Evaluates newly arrested people, including assessing vital signs, injuries, intoxication, and/or any other health concerns.
- Conducts physicals as required by the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).
- Maintains medical inventory and supplies, manages and secures jail residents medications, including distribution and delivery schedules, documentation, and monitoring of patients responses to medications.
- Collaborates with contracted medical providers, local pharmacies, and mental health providers.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalency.
- At least one to three (1-3) years of related work experience in a healthcare setting, working with medical providers.
- Emergency room or psychiatric experience preferred.
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
