JOB SUMMARY

Reports to the Director. Has 24-hour responsibility for the management of nursing personnel, ancillary personnel, and patient care in the assigned area(s).  Contributes to the nursing service department and hospital through support of philosophy, objectives, and educational efforts. Follows, supports, and enforces hospital and nursing service policies and procedures. Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product of service to leadership and staff that is recognized asultimatelycontributing to the patient and family experience.  As a customer- focused Memorial Healthcare team member, he/she must be accessible, flexible, knowledgeable, and responsive.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Plans, implements, and evaluates a nursing care delivery system for assigned area(s) that reflects the hospital and nursing department philosophy using effective principles of leadership and management.
  2. Identifies problems or potential problems in department(s) and works with staff to develop solutions to resolve problems.
  3. Establishes and maintains staffing levels for the department so that a responsible, safe level of patient care is provided with continuity and meets productivity standards.
  4. Provides clinical support and resources for staff.
  5. Promotes good working relationships among nursing staff members in department, between departments, and with other disciplines and departments.
  6. Requirements:
    1. Participation in Nursing Leadership Council (NLC) and Leadership meetings.
    2. Develops unit based QI initiatives annually and participates in organizational quality initiatives (i.e., core measures, HCAHPS, Value Based Purchasing, and Employee Engagement).
    3. Participates in policy and procedure development.
    4. Responsible for ensuring The Joint Commission (TJC) and regulatory compliance
    5. Conducts monthly off-shift rounding.
    6. Daily rounding on patients and employees.
    7. Responsible for staff recruitment, retention, hiring, and termination in coordination with Talent Management.
    8. Oversight for employee education, orientation, development, competency, and certification requirements.
    9. Serves  on  minimum  of  two  (2)  organizational  committees  not  including  mandatory leadership meetings.
    10. Responsible for developing and maintaining compliance with budget and productivity goals.
    11. Participant in organization and leadership development programs.
    12. Responsible for department’s annual budget/capital preparation.
    13. Responsible for annual employee performance evaluations.
    14. Responsible for operational management of assigned department(s).
    15. Provides mentoring, coaching, and leadership development for clinical coordinators.
    16. 24/7 departmental responsibility.
    17. Conducts monthly staff meetings with submission of minutes into NetLearning.
    18. Conducts all written and formal disciplines with employees in coordination with Talent Management.
    19. Develops, communicates, and administers necessary policies and procedures.
  7. Participates  in  professional  and  community  activities  annually  related  to  health  care.
  8. Conducts  department  monthly  safety  rounds  to  ensure  a  secure  environment,  safe  and effective use of equipment and technology, and decreased risk of potential adverse patient occurrences.
  9. Demonstrates knowledgeofandsupportshospitalmission, vision, valuestatements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  10. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on his/her assigned unit.  Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's and division's policies and procedures.
  11. Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  1. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  2. Active RN Michigan license.
  3. Baccalaureate degree in nursing required or must be enrolled.
  4. ACLS required (excluding Behavioral Health and Cancer Center).
  5. Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  6. Departmental specific requirements as outlined in Attachment A

EXPERIENCE 

  1. Five years of hospital clinical nursing experience.
  2. Minimum two years nursing experience in specialty area.
  3. One year of nursing supervision experience in an acute care setting required within the most recent two years.
  4. Previous management experience preferred.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES/MOTOR SKILLS

  1. Able to travel independently throughout all Memorial Healthcare facilities.
  2. Small motor skills required for operating modern computer, office, and telephone equipment as utilized by Memorial Healthcare (MHC).

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL ABILITIES

  1. Hand-eye coordination.
  2. Fine motor skills for administration of medications, starting IV's, insertion and maintenance of various tubes (NG, catheter, etc.), dressing changes, assessment techniques, etc. when needed.
  3. Usecomputer.
  4. Proficiency using modern office, computer and telephone equipmentas used by Memorial Healthcare.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES

  1. Those required of a staff RN plus the ability to effectively problem solve.
  2. Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  3. Understand budget analysis.

  2. Ability to adapt and maintain focus in fast paced, quickly changing or stressful situations.
  3. Ability to read and interpret a variety of documents including, but not limited to policies, operating instructions, white papers, regulations, rules and laws.

  1. Communicate receptively and expressively in English, both written and verbal, with diverse populations, including physicians, patients, families, community agencies, employees, and volunteers.
  2. Visually  assess  patient's  condition  and to auscultate and/or  palpate  as  needed  for assessment or treatment.
  3. Accurately hear communication by phone or in person.
  4. Maintain self-control.
  5. Able to see for the purpose of reading information received in formats including but not limited to paper, computer, reports, bulletins, updates, manuals.
  6. Able to hear for work-related purposes.
