Job Title: Nurse Manager I - Women's Health
Job Description
The Nurse Manager I provides culturally competent, patient-centered nursing leadership for a women's health clinic serving low-income adults in Los Angeles County, with a strong focus on underserved communities. Working under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer/Deputy Nursing Officer and in collaboration with the Site Medical Director, this role leads RNs, LVNs, medical assistants, HIV/STD counselors, phlebotomists, and other clinical support staff to ensure high-quality, cost-effective care. The Nurse Manager I oversees patients' courses of treatment, coordinates care across the team, and partners with leadership to design, implement, and monitor clinic workflows, including the implementation of Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) principles.
Responsibilities
- Provide clinical support to medical providers before and after adult primary care visits to ensure timely delivery of quality medical care.
- Treat adult patients in a timely manner according to established clinical treatment guidelines and protocols.
- Administer vaccines to adult patients in alignment with clinic clinical guidelines and document all interventions accurately.
- Deliver and appropriately document health education for patients, supporting understanding of diagnoses, treatments, and self-management.
- Triage adult patients who walk in to the clinic or call with acute medical concerns, prioritizing care based on clinical urgency.
- Provide chronic disease management for patients referred by providers and develop, implement, and monitor individualized care plans.
- Delegate appropriate chronic disease management referrals and tasks to LVNs while maintaining oversight of patient outcomes.
- Manage patients' courses of treatment and coordinate care with providers and other clinical support staff to achieve quality outcomes within established time frames and efficient use of resources.
- Interface with non-administrative staff to ensure patients receive specialty referrals in a timely manner and are supported in completing those referrals without interruption to care.
- Assist front office staff by reviewing medical records for patients who arrive late or need rescheduling and determining appropriate timing and location for follow-up visits.
- Conduct or co-lead daily morning huddles with the site medical director and nurse manager to align staff on priorities, patient needs, and clinic flow.
- Provide leadership, oversight, and guidance to RNs, LVNs, medical assistants, HIV/STD counselors, phlebotomists, and other non-administrative clinical staff.
- Directly supervise medical assistants, RNs, and LVNs, including coaching, performance feedback, and support for professional development.
- Participate in quality improvement activities as directed by the medical director, contributing to the design and evaluation of initiatives that improve patient care and clinic performance.
- Collaborate with the site medical director and clinic director to optimize operational efficiency and financial performance by reviewing and acting on data related to patient goals, provider productivity, and pharmacy revenue.
- Ensure cost-effective ordering and utilization of clinical supplies while maintaining appropriate inventory and supporting safe patient care.
- Proactively identify opportunities to enhance quality of care, streamline workflows, reduce operational costs, increase staff engagement, and improve the overall patient experience.
- Work closely with the Chief Nursing Officer/Deputy Nursing Officer to design, implement, and monitor clinic workflow processes, including those related to Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).
- Ensure all clinic service activities operate consistently and ethically and meet or exceed contractual requirements, state and federal regulations, and internal policies and procedures.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA and HIPAA requirements and promote a culture of safety, privacy, and regulatory adherence.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Work efficiently and complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Respond flexibly to unanticipated patient needs and adjust workflows and staffing as necessary to meet patient care demands.
- Be available to adjust work hours on short notice to provide supervisory coverage at other clinical sites as needed, including travel between locations.
- Provide coverage and maintain leadership presence until the final patient on-site at the health center has departed.
Essential Skills
- Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
- At least 5 years of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in an ambulatory health care clinic, preferably in a federally qualified health center environment.
- At least 2 years of management experience in a clinical or hospital setting.
- Demonstrated ability to provide culturally competent, non-judgmental services and to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills to address staff and patient issues constructively.
- Proven analytical, problem-solving, planning, evaluation, and organizational skills to support a productive work environment and achievement of clinical and operational goals.
- Ability to maintain accurate clinical records and follow clinical guidelines and protocols consistently.
- Ability to work efficiently, complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy, and solve problems independently.
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed to complete tasks and meet patient and clinic needs.
- Ability to be adaptable and responsive in handling unanticipated patient needs and changing priorities.
- Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
- Experience using electronic health records (EHR/EMR), with the ability to document and retrieve patient information accurately.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in patient-centered care teams, particularly within a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model.
- Experience in chronic disease management, case management, utilization management, and quality improvement projects.
- Experience in an HIV medical practice or with HIV/STD counseling and care.
- Knowledge and experience with eClinicalWorks electronic health record system.
- Familiarity with ambulatory care workflows in a community-based or federally qualified health center setting.
- Interest in working within a mission-driven, values-based organization focused on equitable, patient-centered care.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including social workers, housing specialists, and other clinical and support staff.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinic setting that serves low-income adult patients in Los Angeles County, with a particular emphasis on underserved communities and women's health. The Nurse Manager I works closely with an interdisciplinary team that includes medical providers, RNs, LVNs, medical assistants, HIV/STD counselors, phlebotomists, social workers, housing specialists, and other clinical staff in a highly collaborative environment. The clinic operates within a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model and uses an electronic medical record system, with eClinicalWorks as the preferred platform. The position requires direct on-site leadership, regular participation in morning huddles, and hands-on oversight of clinic flow, patient care activities, and quality improvement initiatives. Work hours may vary, and the Nurse Manager I must be willing to work flexible hours, adjust schedules on short notice, and travel to other clinical sites to provide supervisory coverage when needed. The role includes remaining on-site until the final patient has departed to ensure safe and complete closure of clinical operations.
