Job Description

TITLE: School Nurse

CLASSIFICATION: Instructional Support Staff

PAY GRADE 34: $30.85- $31.95 hourly (based on education and experience)

LENGTH: 7 hours daily/185 days yearly

REPORTS TO: School Nurse Manager and Building Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successfully met the standards for the school services professional and the national standards for school nurse;
  • Obtained a bachelors degree from an approved school of nursing program;
  • Obtained a registered nurses license through the Indiana state board of nursing and maintain this license.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify, review and maintain records of health status/problem of students.
  • Assist nurse coordinator with instructional classes in subjects such as first aid, diabetes care, dental care, hand washing, growth, and development.
  • Collaborate with nurse coordinator and school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional and physical needs of school children.
  • Initiate, maintain and review health records of students in compliance with applicable laws.
  • Report to parents, school personnel, physicians and clinics and other agencies on student medical matters. Disseminate information to school staff on health matters regarding health action plans and health concerns.
  • Classified Nurses will take direction from the certified nurse and implement all care consistent with practices and directives set by the certified nurse.
  • Administer medication and treatment to students per physician's orders and parent authority. Delegate appropriate duties to health aides. Provide training for and assist in the evaluation of health aides.
  • Work with nurse coordinator to address exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Attend case conferences and 504 meetings regarding health services. Participate in in-service trainings/programs. Maintains a professional presence during meetings.
  • Assist building administration for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Gives honest open feedback and communicates in an effective, positive manner.
  • Embraces role as a team member and makes decisions that maintain a cohesive professional learning community.
  • Addresses challenges with analysis and development of solutions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Nurse Coordinator/Supervisor and/or Building Principal.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
