ST. CHARLES PARISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS NURSE PARAEDUCATOR

Job Title: Nurse Paraeducator Position No.: CLASS 2 - PARA Salary Grade: Steps 0-10 Work Year: 180 Days, 7.5 Hours/Day FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Department: Specific School Based Reports To: Principal and Specialty Services Nurse

PURPOSE STATEMENT - The job of Nurse/Paraeducator is done for the purpose/s of assisting the teaching staff with the medical, academic, social and behavior management needs of each student; providing health care services meeting the individual health needs of students; and providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Administers first aid, medication and specialized medical treatments for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.

  • Assists with the collection of data (e.g. assessment, observations, charting, scoring of assessments, etc.) for the purpose of collecting information on student progress and planning for learning goals.

  • Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforce lessons, provide practice, facilitate activities, computer learning programs, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.

  • Communicates with teachers and/or parents for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing student learning objectives.

  • Conducts age appropriate programs and/or activities in conjunction with classroom curriculum (e.g. health education, nutritional workshops, etc.) for the purpose of supporting established lesson plans.

  • Implements health care plans for students with health problems for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health problems and/or accommodation requirements.

  • Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.

  • Maintains student's confidential files and records for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.

  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams for the purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs, service delivery, and educational programs; and/or improving skills and knowledge.

  • Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.

  • Responds to emergency medical situations for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action.

  • Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; and operating medical equipment utilized in school environment.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: providing health services in a school setting; state laws regarding sexually transmitted diseases; health standards and hazards; and stages of child development.

Work Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. The employee may occasionally lift up to 25 pounds such as student equipment and wheelchairs. The employee may be exposed to physical contact from aggressive students. The employee will need additional ability in executing physical restraint and control of children.

Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.

Education: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.

Certificates and Licenses: License to practice nursing (as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse) in Louisiana
