    Job Description

    The Interventional Radiology (IR) Nurse Practitioner is a highly skilled clinician who provides expert procedural and clinical care throughout the interventional radiology patient experience, including pre-procedural evaluation, intra-procedural support, and post-procedural management. The AHP practices in close collaboration with the interventional radiology attending physicians and interdisciplinary care team to promote excellent patient care across outpatient and inpatient settings.

    This position requires flexibility for the APP to work at all UCSF Health facilities/locations

    Minimum License/Certifications:

    1. California Registered Nurse (RN) License without restriction

    2. California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction

    3. California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number including Schedule II furnishing privileges

    4. NP national board certification from an accepted certifying agency aligned with the patient population and clinical role

    Adult Hybrid Inpatient and Outpatient (ACNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACNPC-AG, ACNPC). See Addendum A below for more detail.

    1. California Driver License (if required for position)

    2. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address

    3. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

    4. Additional required AHA certifications: ACLS

    5. Additional required certifications (such as ENLS): None

    Minimum Education/Experience

    Graduation from a California Board of Registered Nursing approved or verified school of nursing with a master's degree in nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

    Nurse Practitioner

    • Must have at least six (6) months of NP experience.
    • Two (2)years of inpatient or acute care NP experience.
    • Ability to independently perform inpatient E&M assessment

    Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):

    1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills

    2. Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients

    3. Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role

    4. Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by health care providers and team members

    5. Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider

    6. Submit health plan (Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial for all APPs; also, CCS for pediatric providers) enrollment by first clinical day

    7. At all times, must adhere to the UCSF Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, Code of Conduct, PRIDE values, and applicable medical center/campus/departmental policies and procedures

    8. At all times, must adhere to all UCSF policies regarding HIPPA, privacy, communication, documentation, encounter closure, and billing

    9. Mandatory attendance at the Office of Advanced Practice Providers Orientation Sessions

    10. Mandatory attendance at the APP Onboarding Committee APP Onboarding Series

    11. This position requires flexibility for the APP to work at all UCSF Health facilities/locations

    12.Performs other duties as assigned

    Preferred Education/Experience:

    • Experience in interventional radiology, surgery, hospital medicine, critical care, or oncology.
    • Experience with inpatient consult services.
    • Experience working in an academic medical center or large integrated health system.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities(KSA):

    1. Demonstrated sterile technique and procedural skill.

    2. Prior independent performance of paracentesis and thoracentesis.

    3. Prior ultrasound-guided biopsy experience.

The AHP practices in close collaboration with the interventional radiology attending physicians and interdisciplinary care team to promote excellent patient care across outpatient and inpatient settings.

    Key responsibilities for this role include (but not limited to) the following:

    • Billable inpatient evaluation and management (E&M) services including evaluation of new adult inpatient consults, daily rounding on established IR patients, assistance with admission and discharge for primary IR patients and with care coordination for all IR patients across all UCSF campuses.

    • Comprehensive pre-procedural evaluation and preparation of adult patients undergoing IR procedures: obtain and document relevant history, perform physical examinations, review diagnostic data, and identify patient-specific risks or barriers to care.

    • Develop and implement peri-procedural plans of care in collaboration with the interventional radiology attending

    • Provide sterile first-assist support in IR suites and independently perform select low-complexity procedures for adult patients within the approved scope of practice, training and competency.

    • Manage post-procedural recovery, follow-up, patient education, and care coordination.

    • Communicate with referring teams, consulting services, nursing staff, technologists, and other interdisciplinary team members to facilitate timely and effective care.

    • Participate in outpatient clinical management including outpatient IR clinic, daily triage for add-on cases, consultations, and longitudinal follow up as needed.

    • Document care accurately and thoroughly in the medical record in accordance with institutional, regulatory, and billing requirements.

    • Contribute to quality improvement, workflow optimization, patient access, and program development

    Clinical and Evaluation & Management Responsibilities

    • Perform in-person evaluation of new inpatient IR consults.

    • Conduct daily bedside rounding on established IR inpatients.

    • Develop and document assessment and plan of care in collaboration with IR attendings.

    • Communicate recommendations to referring teams and coordinate next steps.

    • Document and bill E&M encounters in accordance with coding guidelines.

    Care Coordination

    • Coordinate procedures, imaging, labs, anticoagulation management, and peri-procedural planning.

    • Serve as point of contact for inpatient teams regarding IR-managed patients. Support consult-to-procedure workflow optimization

    Procedure Assistance

    • Provide sterile first-assist support in IR suites and independently perform select low-complexity procedures for adult patients within the approved scope of practice, training and competency.

    Quality, Safety & Professional Practice

    • Participate in OPPE/FPPE, onboarding, and ongoing competency validation.

    • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives related to access, throughput, and LOS.
