Position Overview

We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Consult Service at our downtown Baltimore campus. This is a full-time, day shift position (5 days/week) focused on delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care to hospitalized patients with substance use disorders.

This role blends clinical care, care coordination, education, and leadership in a collaborative academic environment.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Perform comprehensive history and physical assessments
  • Diagnose and manage patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including medication management
  • Initiate clinical pathways and evidence-based protocols
  • Perform procedures as appropriate to scope of practice
  • Collaborate on admissions, transfers, and discharges

Care Coordination & Communication

  • Serve as a key liaison between patients, families, and the multidisciplinary care team
  • Communicate care plans with physicians, nurses, case managers, and referring providers
  • Facilitate safe, timely discharge planning and continuity of care
  • Coordinate referrals to addiction treatment programs and community resources

Patient Advocacy & Education

  • Educate patients and families on substance use disorders, treatment options, and recovery resources
  • Promote harm reduction, prevention, and long-term recovery strategies
  • Advocate for patient-centered, equitable care

Leadership & Quality Improvement

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives (LOS, readmissions, patient outcomes)
  • Support development of clinical pathways and best practices in addiction medicine
  • Contribute to policy development and care model innovation
  • Participate in peer review, chart audits, and performance improvement efforts

Education & Professional Development

  • Provide education to staff, trainees, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor
  • Participate in academic activities such as grand rounds, research, or publications

Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in Maryland (or eligible)
  • DEA and CDS eligible
  • Minimum of 1 year of RN experience
  • CPR certification; ACLS/BLS as required for inpatient practice
  • Strong communication, clinical decision-making, and interpersonal skills

Preferred

  • Experience in addiction medicine, behavioral health, or inpatient medicine
  • Prior experience in consult services or hospital-based care
  • Involvement in research, teaching, or professional organizations

Work Schedule & Environment

  • Full-time, day shift (5 days per week)
  • Some weekends, holidays, or on-call responsibilities may be required
  • Hospital-based setting with exposure to infectious diseases (PPE required)
