Position Overview
The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) is responsible for providing comprehensive healthcare services within a correctional healthcare environment. This role includes assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients; executing physician orders; administering medications; ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests; and developing comprehensive patient care plans. The ARNP collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality patient care while maintaining compliance with applicable healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and correctional policies. The position requires strong clinical judgment, effective communication skills, and the ability to respond calmly and efficiently in high-stress and emergency situations.
Job Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive nursing care, including executing physician orders, administering medications, performing examinations, and delivering treatments and procedures.
Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to assess patient conditions and healthcare needs.
Document physical findings, formulate patient prognoses, and collaborate with healthcare professionals to develop patient care plans.
Recommend medications and treatment plans within the scope of licensure.
Monitor inpatient hospitalizations and coordinate appropriate discharge planning.
Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of medical equipment and work areas.
Assist in monitoring the delivery of required healthcare services and contractual obligations.
Maintain professional working relationships with facility staff, healthcare providers, and external agencies.
Utilize established policies and procedures while exercising independent clinical judgment.
Evaluate healthcare services to prevent duplication or inappropriate utilization.
Maintain confidentiality and security of all medical records and documentation.
Monitor patients with serious or potentially catastrophic illnesses and ensure appropriate interventions.
Recommend improvements to operational efficiency and healthcare service delivery.
Audit pharmacy utilization for compliance with formulary guidelines and applicable pharmacy regulations.
Observe and document patient behavior and health status.
Provide health education and counseling to individuals and groups as required.
Review and interpret medical, legal, and technical documents, including medical instructions and legal records.
Assist with legal and compliance matters, including chart reviews and participation in legal proceedings when necessary.
Communicate effectively with administration, staff, patients, visitors, and the public using professionalism and sound judgment.
Attend staff meetings and participate in multidisciplinary committees to support quality healthcare initiatives.
Evaluate and recommend workplace safety measures to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
Support accreditation processes and maintain compliance with applicable healthcare standards and regulations.
Prepare safety and incident reports and respond appropriately to emergencies and unusual incidents.
Perform emergency response and rescue functions, including administering basic emergency medical care.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships while managing difficult interpersonal interactions.
Recognize and appropriately de-escalate disruptive or potentially hostile situations.
Accurately and thoroughly document all medical care provided.
Analyze information, establish facts, and make sound clinical decisions.
Remain alert and respond effectively in emergency and high-stress situations.
Job Requirements
Graduate of an accredited college or university nursing program.
Current licensure and/or certification as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) in the state of employment.
Training or experience in family practice required.
Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience required.
Valid driver's license required.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, medical terminology, and clinical procedures.
Ability to interpret medical, legal, and technical documents.
Excellent communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
Ability to work rotating shifts and perform duties in a correctional healthcare environment.
Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in stressful or hostile situations.
