Overview

Under general direction, the Nursing & Allied Health Classroom Support Technician coordinates instructional and laboratory support for Nursing and Allied health programs at Everett Community College, with a primary emphasis on the Medical Assisting program and clinical simulation. This position sets up and coordinates skills and clinical labs, including administrative and clinical competencies, phlebotomy, EKG, injections, vital signs, and point-of-care procedures, and provides technical support for the Clinical Simulation Laboratory. The technician partners with faculty to deliver realistic, well-run learning experiences that prepare students for entry-level practice and program accreditation and certification requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Medical Assisting Program & Allied Health Lab Support

  • Coordinate the preparation, setup, and teardown of Medical Assisting skills and clinical labs, including administrative and clinical competency stations such as vital signs, phlebotomy and venipuncture, capillary/blood draws, EKG, injections and medication administration, specimen collection, and point-of-care testing.
  • Prepare, stock, and maintain lab supplies, consumables, and clinical instruments (task trainers, exam equipment, EKG machines, autoclaves/sterilization equipment, phlebotomy and injection supplies) so MA and allied health scenarios are ready and adequately stocked for each session.
  • Set up simulated clinical and front-office environments that replicate a medical office/clinic setting for MA students to practice administrative and clinical workflows.
  • Support faculty in developing and refining lab procedures, demonstration models, and competency check-offs aligned with Medical Assisting accreditation and certification (e.g., CAAHEP/MAERB) standards and program outcomes.
  • Follow appropriate safety, infection-control, and OSHA/bloodborne-pathogen procedures in handling clinical supplies, sharps, specimens, and any hazardous materials; ensure proper disposal and lab compliance.
  • Provide instructional support for other Nursing and allied health courses as needed, coordinating support services across a variety of health-science labs.

Clinical Simulation Operations & Technical Support

  • Coordinate, set up, operate, and tear down the SIM lab to create realistic virtual healthcare environments, including staging equipment, supplies, moulage, and audio/visual systems.
  • Program and test high- and low-fidelity simulation software that varies mannequin physiological responses (vital signs, breath and heart sounds, pharmacological reactions) to instructor specifications for each scenario.
  • Operate SIM equipment, task trainers, and related technology during healthcare simulation scenarios, adjusting patient responses in real time to support faculty-directed learning objectives.
  • Conduct audio/visual recording of simulation experiences and transfer files to archival format for faculty debrief and future analysis.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and repair computerized mannequins (hardware and software), task trainers, and multimedia peripherals; troubleshoot and correct SIM lab software and hardware malfunctions in a timely fashion to minimize disruption to instruction.

Equipment, Coordination & Lab Management

  • Inspect, test, adjust, and perform major repair of simulation and laboratory support equipment; evaluate equipment specifications and make purchase recommendations.
  • Act as coordinator of the labs, controlling equipment, consumable supplies, and use of space across Medical Assisting, allied health, and simulation functions; coordinate lab support, maintenance, and store room functions.
  • Manage the planning and scheduling of labs and the SIM lab for students, faculty, and staff to maximize utilization and avoid conflicts.
  • Monitor, maintain, and track inventory necessary for labs and simulation scenarios; maintain a computerized inventory system and reorder supplies as needed.
  • Maintain records of lab and SIM activities; collect and compile data to evaluate use and effectiveness and prepare reports for faculty, program leadership, and accreditation stakeholders.

Faculty & Student Support

  • Provide hands-on technical support to faculty as they plan, design, implement, and evaluate lab and simulation experiences, advising on how equipment and technology can be used to meet learning objectives.
  • Train and orient students and faculty in the safe operation of clinical, lab, and simulation equipment and relevant software.
  • Facilitate and encourage use of the labs and SIM lab by providing positive student experiences and building strong working relationships with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Support faculty in determining appropriate strategies to prepare Medical Assisting and Allied Health students for entry-level clinical practice and certification exams.

General Duties

  • Direct or provide lead-work guidance to assigned classified instructional technicians or student workers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations and meet the needs of the campus, including cross-coverage of instructional support functions during peak periods.
  • Provide front desk coverage for the Health Professions Service Center as needed, assisting students, faculty, and visitors while ensuring efficient office operations.
  • Maintain relationships with the campus community and external clinical partners; support outreach related to Medical Assisting, Allied Health, and clinical simulation.
  • Support the department, division, and campus at-large through reliable, collaborative technical support that advances Nursing and Allied Health program outcomes and strategic goals.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Verifiable Medical Assistant Certified credential with the state of Washington, required by our accrediting body.
  • Two years of full-time experience providing lab and/or simulation support for health sciences education programs at a level equivalent to Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2, or equivalent education/experience working as a Medical Assistant Certified.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of healthcare-related clinical patient care and Medical Assisting clinical/administrative competencies sufficient to set up and support realistic labs and simulations in partnership with faculty.
  • Knowledge of infection control, bloodborne-pathogen/OSHA safety, and proper handling and disposal of sharps, specimens, and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair computerized simulation mannequins, task trainers, clinical equipment, and multimedia/AV equipment in a timely fashion.
  • Proficiency with computer hardware and software applications, including the Microsoft Office suite and software relevant to simulation and lab function.
  • Proficiency in the use of audio/visual equipment (video cameras, monitors, microphones, and recording/debrief systems).
  • Knowledge of and experience in project management, workflow mapping, and process improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and customer-service skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare and present detailed reports.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student, faculty, and staff populations.
  • Flexibility and creativity; responsiveness to changing systems and priorities.

Preferred

  • Current Medical Assisting credential (e.g., CMA (AAMA), RMA, or CCMA) and/or phlebotomy or EKG certification.
  • Advanced coursework or certification in healthcare simulation (e.g., CHSOS, Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist).
  • Experience providing lead-work direction, supervising, or onboarding and developing training plans for staff or student workers.
  • Direct experience programming high-fidelity simulators and managing lab scheduling and utilization data.
