This is an adjunct faculty pool for teaching part-time in the Nursing department at the Health Professions Center in White City (Table Rock Campus). Lab/clinical instruction will take place in hospital and other settings both in Grants Pass and Medford. The pool will remain open until June 2027 unless positions are no longer needed.
Instructor is responsible for implementation of assigned nursing clinical courses, providing direct supervision and assessing progress of assigned nursing students in a hospital or other clinical setting. Participate in program faculty meetings. Maintain college standards regarding professionalism, record keeping and instruction within the faculty team of the nursing program.
Supervision Received
The Dean is responsible for evaluating nursing faculty and collaborates with the Director of Nursing and Allied Health and/or Coordinator regarding faculty workload, professional development, retention, program needs, and staffing decisions.
Examples of Duties - Essential Functions
Provides feedback regarding student clinical schedules and objectives to clinical coordinator.
Provides a positive role model for the students, especially in the areas of caring, advocacy, respect for self and others, collegiality, ethical behavior, ethical reasoning, and strong work ethic (including responsibility, dependability, and accountability) and provides constructive feedback to students.
Provides direct supervision and evaluation of students as they perform in lab or deliver patient care in clinical facility for 8-10 hours per day. Activities to be supervised and at times modeled include:
a. Detecting changes in skin color, temperature or condition
b. Collecting data from recording equipment and measurement devices used in client care
c. Drawing up the correct quantity of medication into a syringe
d. Detecting sounds related to bodily functions using a stethoscope
e. Communicating clearly and effectively with clients and with other members of the healthcare team
f. Detecting anatomical abnormalities, such as subcutaneous crepitus, edema, or infiltrated intravenous fluid
g. Manipulating small equipment and containers, such as syringes, vials, ampules, and medication packages, to administer medications.
h. Safely transferring clients in and out of bed and assisting them with ambulation using appropriate devices to prevent client falls
i. Lifting or moving clients or objects, pulling or pushing objects, weighing up to 35 pounds
j. Turning and positioning clients as needed to prevent complications due to bed rest
k. Hanging intravenous bags at the appropriate level (shoulder or higher level)
l. Accurately reading the volumes in body fluid collection devices hung or placed below bed level
m. Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation
n. Dealing with the unexpected e.g. changing client status
o. Demonstrating ability to take the correct action in a client situation based on previous learning.
Provides individual performance review and recommendations to students as needed.
Facilitates students adjustment to clinical facility.
Provides access to medical record-keeping system used in facility.
Matches clinical experience to clinical objectives as closely as possible.
Utilizes steps of nursing process to facilitate student achievements of objectives.
Provides professional clinical support through pre- and post-conferences.
Evaluates and provides feedback on required patient care plans, journals and other written assignments.
Acts as liaison between staff and students.
Completes weekly written evaluation on each student and has student review and sign, and formally discusses and documents more extensive evaluations with students one to two times per quarter per program policy.
Notifies students who may be having problems in clinical performance of their deficits or problems in a timely and confidential manner and works with students to identify ways to improve their performance.
Brings major problems of students clinical performance to faculty meetings for advice, guidance and counsel.
Arrives at assigned clinical sites on time and is prompt in grading and returning student assignments and submitting evaluations to program director.
Attends and participates in required nursing department faculty meetings.
Remains in the assigned facility at all times when students are performing direct patient care.
Takes necessary steps to ensure that students are aware of changes in facility policies and procedures.
Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the philosophy and objectives, curriculum, policies and standards of the program on a periodic basis.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Screening Criteria
Education: Bachelors degree in nursing required (or exception as allowed by Oregon State Board of Nursing Division 21 rules). RN with associate degree actively working toward bachelors or masters degree in Nursing will be considered with OSBN permission.) Masters degree in nursing preferred.
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
Experience: At least two years of recent full-time medical-surgical acute care nursing experience required. Broad clinical and teaching experience preferred.
Knowledge of: Computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the Internet, spreadsheets and database management, multi-media presentations; curriculum development; the community colleges mission, role in higher education, and student population; and sensitivity to a diverse student body and its needs; of the role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act; of a variety of pedagogical methods, including lecture, group activity, discussion and individual instruction to accommodate a variety of learning styles.
Ability to: Able to be deemed "fit" by Senior and Persons with Disability (SPD) Division following required Criminal History check. Able to travel to clinical sites in Medford or Grants Pass as required.
Ability to safely demonstrate, model, and instruct students using proper procedures and protocol. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with respect to diverse students, staff, agencies and community members; ability and willingness to work with non-traditional adult learners as well as teens; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity in both the classroom and related educational duties, including the use of new technologies such as online instruction; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth. Pass a criminal background check.
Licenses: Current Oregon RN license (or Oregon RN license by hire date). If required to drive on behalf of the college, must possess a valid Oregon Driver License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record. Current healthcare provider-level CPR certification required. Ability to meet clinical partner requirements, including criminal background checks, drug screening, immunization verification, and other compliance requirements as mandated by state law, regulatory agencies, or clinical placement sites.

Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 60%), which is spent in a lab/clinical setting, utilizing equipment; and sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, and other standard office equipment. On feet 90% of time. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 35 pounds on a regular basis. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a laboratory/ hospital environment, and is potentially exposed to body fluids, pathogens, and hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most lab/hospital environments with potentially loud equipment, frequent interruptions, and background noises. Lighting is adequate.

Adjunct faculty are hired on a term-by-term basis and are not eligible for benefits.
