    Job Description

    The Ambulatory Surgery Center in University of Iowa Health Care perioperative division is seeking a Nursing Practice Leader to act as a change agent for a specific patient population by incorporating the roles of clinical specialist, educator, consultant, practitioner, researcher, and administrator as indicated to support and enhance patient care. Provide leadership and supervision for a specific area of responsibility.

    Duties to include:

    • Provide Leadership and Oversight for Specialized Services or Populations

    • Provide leadership for nursing care delivery and documentation based on systematic evaluation, evidence-based practice, and research.

    • Serves as the primary contact and liaison between clinical teams and IT, to ensure clear and effective bi-directional communication related to user needs and system requirements. Works with end-users to define system requirements and understand business needs; organizes and manages customer-driven services in an efficient, timely manner.

    • Guides nursing and patient care services personnel through the translation of clinical practice into electronic health information systems to improvement efficiencies.

    • Maintains an area of functionality expertise and ownership, while also be able to speak at a high level across workflows involving areas of ownership.

    • Specialized Services for Nursing Care

    • Support the conduct of research and translate findings from evidence-based research into clinical practice.

    • Lead evaluation and implementation of clinical technologies that support patient care.

    • Partner with the University of Iowa academic campus as needed related to informatics issues and education.

    • Provide Education, Training and Support

    • Leverage clinical expertise in support of the clinical user community. Ensure optimal understanding and utilization of electronic health systems through ongoing education, training, and support.

    • Provides in-depth education to a variety of audiences (clinical staff, patients, students, IT partners) through project collaboration, one-on-one sessions, small group demonstrations and contribute to application go-live support efforts.

    • Communicate detailed, complex medical and technical information to a variety of audiences.

    • Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education

    • Maintains knowledge of current trends and issues in healthcare, nursing practice, healthcare informatics, national and statewide standards and regulations, enterprise policies, protocols and guidelines as related to clinical practice and the legal implications of clinical systems.

    • Utilizes advanced knowledge and skill of compliance requirements to lead the development and implementation of policies, protocols, and guidelines.

    • Plays an integral role in establishing and monitoring EHR based workflows that support internal policy and external regulatory standards.

    • Active involvement in regulatory visits and ongoing organizational readiness.

    • Promote safe and effective care delivery through review of events and development of solutions.

    • Collaborate with nursing leaders to support quality and safety initiative.

    • System Design and Testing

    • Serves as a liaison among clinical leaders, end-users, developers, and project managers with a focus on consistent and congoing customer support to achieve accuracy, efficiency, and satisfaction, when using the electronic medical record.

    • Translates clinical requirements into system design and workflow customization, data collection, and database builds.

    • Develops sample input data, and tests system changes for usability, safety, performance, and adherence to standards. Verifies results with clinicians, developers, and project managers.

    • Obtains and maintains appropriate EPIC certification(s)

    • Provide direction, evaluative feedback, coaching and counseling to the user community to ensure outcomes are achieved.

    • Identifies professional development opportunities and encourages continuous learning.

    • Ability to manage the successful and smooth transition from current to desired culture, practices, structure, and overall organizational environment.

    Required Qualifications

    • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field. If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a BSN is required.
    • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
    • Considerable (3-5 years) clinical experience in a health care environment of similar size and complexity such as a large medical center or teaching hospital. Must include a minimum of 2 years' experience in a perioperative environment.
    • Minimum of 1 year in a clinical leadership role in a similar setting.
    • 1-3 years of experience contributing to a clinical information system implementation cycle through areas such as design, workflow analysis, build, training, implementation and support in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
    • Ability to lead change in a complex academic healthcare environment and promote the understanding and effective use of information technology across departments.
    • Excellent communication skills at the verbal, written and presentation level. Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical staff.
    • Proven project management skills: ability to coordinate activities and projects across departments, time management, organization of workload, analytical decision-making skills, attention to detail, and thoroughness.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of products (such as Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint).
    • Experience working independently with a strong focus on customer service.
    • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and interdisciplinary team leadership skills

    Desirable Qualifications

    • Clinical practice experience at the University of Iowa Health Care
    • Experience using EPIC in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
    • Certification in nursing specialty or role
    • Ability to assess learning needs and match to the most effective education methods.
    • Experience authorizing training materials and leading training sessions in a variety of formats.
