Nursing Professional Development Specialist (RN)

The Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialist is a registered nurse who provides leadership in nursing education, professional development, and clinical practice. This role is responsible for assessing learning needs; designing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs; and promoting evidence-based practice to support high-quality patient care and positive clinical outcomes.

The NPD Specialist serves as a clinical expert, educator, mentor, and consultant to nursing staff and interdisciplinary teams. Working collaboratively with leaders and frontline staff, this position supports orientation, competency validation, continuing education, specialty certification, and professional growth while fostering a culture of lifelong learning and clinical excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess educational and professional development needs across assigned clinical areas.

  • Design, implement, and evaluate orientation, competency, and continuing education programs.

  • Serve as a clinical resource, mentor, and coach to nursing staff, supporting development from novice to expert practice.

  • Promote evidence-based practice and facilitate the integration of current research into clinical care.

  • Collaborate with nursing leadership and interdisciplinary teams to improve clinical quality, patient safety, and staff performance.

  • Lead or participate in quality improvement initiatives, shared governance activities, and organizational education projects.

  • Develop educational materials, competency assessments, and learning resources to support regulatory and organizational requirements.

  • Evaluate educational outcomes and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

Education

  • Minimum MLD - Master's Level Degree (required)

Experience:

  • 3 years clinical experience (required)

  • Perioperative (preferred)

  • Demonstrated clinical expertise and experience in nursing education, staff development, or clinical leadership.

  • Strong communication, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of adult learning principles, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement methodologies.

  • ACLS certification required for Intermediate Care and Critical Care areas.
