Job Summary
Provides 24/7 administrative and clinical leadership across the hospital during assigned shift. The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for ensuring safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care delivery through real-time coordination of staffing, patient flow, and resource allocation. Serves as the on-site representative of hospital leadership, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, supporting clinical decision-making, and responding to emergent situations.
Essential Functions
Ø Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization
Ø Physical rounding and assessment of all patient care requirements and acuity across all
Ø Assess patient acuity and care requirements across all units to ensure appropriate staffing and resource allocation
Ø Develop and implement staffing plans based on acuity and census
Ø Ensure compliance with NJDOH, CMS, and Joint Commission standards
Ø Oversee patient flow, bed management, and throughput
Ø Respond to emergency situations and coordinate care
Ø Oversee infection prevention practices (CLABSI, CAUTI, sepsis)
Ø Ensure EMTALA compliance including screening and transfers
Ø Initiate and participate in incident investigations and RCA
Ø Support Just Culture and safe practice environment
Ø Facilitate patient/family conflict resolution
Ø Ensure HIPAA compliance and confidentiality
Ø Escalate unit specific issues to the assigned manager
Ø Escalate significant incidents and concerns to Administrator-On-Call, such as:
· Patient safety concerns
· Unusual patient/family issues
· Physician concerns
· Borrowing or lending of major equipment
· Major damage or utility outages
· Security related incidents
· Public relations or media events
· ED Transfers outside of the facility
Minimum Education/Certifications
Ø Graduate of accredited nursing program; BSN preferred
Ø Current RN license in the State of New Jersey
Ø BLS – Basic Life Support (AHA)
Ø ACLS – Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (AHA)
Ø PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (AHA)
Minimum Work Experience Minimum of 3–5 years of acute care nursing experience required, with demonstrated leadership or charge nurse experience. Prior supervisory, management and/or experience with ICU / high-acuity environments strongly preferred
Expected Hours of Work/Holiday Requirement
Ø Must be willing to work holidays, weekends and provide additional coverage as needed
Ø Full-Time Supervisors: Required to work 2 major and 1 minor holiday annually
Ø Per Diem Supervisors: Required to work 1 major holiday annually and 1 minor holiday based on departmental need
Ø Holiday assignments will be rotated equitably year-to-year
Ø No employee will be scheduled for the same major holiday in consecutive years unless voluntarily requested and approved by the manager
Ø A holiday tracking log will be maintained to ensure fairness
Ø Staff may request trades, subject to approval
Ø Final schedule determined based on patient care needs and staffing requirements
Decision-Making Authority
Ø Authority to reassign staff and adjust staffing levels based on patient care needs
Ø Authority to activate contingency staffing and escalation plans
Ø Authority to initiate diversion in collaboration with leadership
Ø Authority to escalate clinical and operational concerns to executive leadership
