Performs direct and indirect patient care activities under supervision of licensed personnel.
Nursing Assistant Apprenticeship Program Exemption Criteria:
For individuals with previous or like experience, the following criteria will be used to determine whether the NA applicant will attend
the in-house Nursing Assistant Apprenticeship Program:
a. Holds a current CNA License or
b. is a current student in a qualified nursing program or
c. has a verifiable positive work history of at least two years as a nursing assistant/nursing technician in an acute care hospital or
long term care facility.

All direct patient care provided by the Nursing Technician will be under the direction and supervision of the Registered
Nurse assigned to those patients.
Performs direct patient care activities while maintaining maximum comfort and safety of patients under the direction and
supervision of the Registered Nurse.
a. Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
b. Receives assignment and bedside report from off-going Nursing Technician and assigned RN every shift.
c. Handoffs are performed using the standardized approach of ISBAR (introduction, situation, background, assessment,
recommendation) in a clear, concise, and accurate manner with an opportunity for questions from NT and RN.
d. Obtains and maintains accurate patient data and documents appropriately in medical records including but not limited to vital
signs (BP, HR, RR, temporal artery, or oral temperatures), intake and output (outputs only in critical care), height and weight etc.
e. Recognizes and communicates changes in patient's vital signs, physical and/or mental condition to the Registered Nurse.
f. Provides personal care assistance with activities of daily living to patients including: bathing, dressing, eating, drinking, oral care,
elimination and transportation.
g. Assists Registered Nurse in skin care including repositioning, cleaning of wounds, and pressure ulcer prevention.
h. Demonstrates ability to assist in patient transfers effectively and safely.
i. Apply monitoring devices as EKG leads and pulse oximetry probes.
j. Collects clean-catch urine, sputum, and stool specimens as directed and overseen by the Registered Nurse.
k. Demonstrates the ability and competency in operating equipment including but not limited to beds, chairs, lift equipment, alarms,
bladder scanner, etc.
l. Assist with physical and pulmonary exercises including range of motion, incentive spirometry, cough, and deep breath etc. and
document appropriately. Provides oral suctioning as needed.

m. Provides passive and active range of motion exercises as ordered; provides massages as ordered.
n. Appropriately decides on temporarily placing tube feeding equipment on hold while providing care.
o. Assists providers with medical treatments as approved and supervised by the Registered Nurse.
p. Initiates Code Blue system when appropriate; provides CPR until relieved by the Code Team.
q. Provides postmortem care as directed. May remove medical equipment / devices as appropriate and under the direction of the
Registered Nurse.
r. Participates in other direct care duties specific to the nursing unit to which the NT is assigned. Refer to the unit specific duty and
responsibility addendum.
