DESCRIPTION

The Turtle Back Zoo is looking for a detail-oriented and organized individual to join its Animal Nutrition Department. This part-time role is essential for ensuring all zoo residents receive precisely measured and prepared diets. Under direction, this position prepares prescribed diets for a wide variety of exotic species and maintains the highest standards of cleanliness in the zoo's commissary. Good communication, organizational skills, and the ability to work well alone or with others in a team environment are a must.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class are primarily involved with dietary preparation, food storage management, and sanitation of the commissary facilities. While the work supports the health of many taxonomic classes, this position is strictly "behind the scenes" and does not involve any direct animal care, training, or exhibit cleaning.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  • Prepares specific, prescribed diets for all animals throughout the zoo, including weighing, chopping, and mixing ingredients according to dietary sheets.
  • Stocks shelves and maintains a meticulous supply of food items, including produce, dry goods, and frozen items.
  • Performs frequent inventory rotations to ensure all food items are fresh and within expiration.
  • Cleans and sanitizes the kitchen, prep surfaces, and food storage areas (including walk-in refrigerators and freezers) daily.
  • Cleans and sterilizes animal food bowls, storage containers, and preparation tools.
  • Operates industrial kitchen equipment such as commercial scales, blenders, and slicers.
  • Receives and inspects food shipments for quality and accuracy against orders.
  • Maintains simple records regarding food orders, deliveries and diet changes.

Experience Required

CRITERIA AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: LICENSE: Appointees will be required to possess a driver''s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation standards, and kitchen hygiene. • Knowledge of weights and measures for precise dietary preparation. • Ability to follow complex written diet instructions and recipes accurately. • Ability to work in various environments, including cold storage (walk-in freezers/fridges) and humid kitchen areas. • Ability to lift and move heavy food sacks or crates up to 75 lbs. • Ability to maintain simple inventory and delivery records. • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with co-workers and zoo guests. • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the zoo or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. Physical aspects of the job include: stooping, sitting, twisting, lifting, standing for long periods of time and walking (often on uneven terrain). The position involves working in all weather conditions, as well as on weekends and holidays and is subject to 24-hour on-call availability.
