Duties/Responsibilities

Maintain the surgical laboratory facility by stocking, cleaning, organizing and performing daily, weekly or monthly tasks as assigned.

Percentage of time 40 Duties/Responsibilities

Animal care includes monitoring of physical health/well-being and management. May assist with research involving shelter owned animals. Assist with the collection of blood by venipuncture, and urine by expression or free collection. Administration of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications and medications by oral, parenteral and injectable routes. Husbandry duties to include feeding, watering, exercising and cleaning. Enable sample collection through preparations, animal restraint, execution, processing. Administer medications. Enrich, and/or acclimate animals to new environments or equipment. Maintain accurate records and abide by the rules and regulations of the department, college, and university.

Percentage of time 40 Duties/Responsibilities

Professionally communicate with investigators, sponsors, and colleagues concerning the affected work flow, time limitations, and project status. Attention to detail. Maintain a positive attitude and calm demeanor throughout stressful situations.

  • Maintain the surgical laboratory facility by stocking, cleaning, organizing and performing daily, weekly or monthly tasks as assigned
  • Aid in the receiving and discharge of the shelter animal patients
  • Facilitate the execution of animal research projects on behalf of PIs in the surgical laboratory setting
  • Maintain accurate records with every aspect of research projects and patient medical records
  • Potentially:
  • Perform routine or after hours checks and evaluations of animals
  • Husbandry duties to include feeding, watering, and cleaning
  • Animal restraint
  • Medicating
  • Assist with research involving shelter owned animals
  • Assist with sample collection preparation, execution, and processing
  • Exercise, enrich, and/or acclimate animals to new environments or equipment
  • Exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Abide by the rules and regulations of the IACUC, College, University, SAMS department and the Office of Academic Affairs

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

Current student; reliable transportation or close proximity

Animal handling experience. Enrolled in the graduate veterinary curriculum or pre-vet undergraduate curriculum. Walk/handle large dogs up to 90 lbs.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Experience and/or willingness to handle multiple species of animals including but not limited to canine, feline, rodents, and avian species.

Ability to effectively communicate, maintain accurate documentation, and pay attention to detail. Ability to work in a sometimes-stressful environment. Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills while carrying out instructions. Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

Basic computer knowledge in MSWord and Excel

Physical Demands

Physical demands of the position, which include but are not limited to, prolonged standing, crouching or kneeling, lifting heavy patients.

  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
  • Dealing with stressful situations.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
  • Wearing all protective gear, including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles.
  • May need to work for long periods of time with arms extended.
