OB/GYN Hospitalist - Academic Role

Overview: Our organization is seeking a dedicated OB/GYN Hospitalist physician who is passionate about resident and fellow education to join our esteemed Department of OB/GYN. We are looking for candidates whose clinical expertise, commitment to teaching, interest in research, and community involvement align with our mission of excellence. This role provides a comprehensive practice within a multidisciplinary, inclusive team, offering avenues for leadership and professional growth. Clinical duties will include serving as the attending physician and/or an independent provider overseeing Labor and Delivery, Postpartum care, the Obstetric Emergency Department, gynecological consultations, and urgent/emergent gynecological procedures. The scheduling can be tailored to individual preferences, with a focus on night coverage.

About the OB/GYN Department: Our facility is a teaching hospital situated in the vibrant center of Denver. With a capacity of 525 beds, it holds a Trauma Level 1 designation and features a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The OB/GYN department delivers comprehensive obstetric and gynecological services through a collaborative, integrated model that includes OB/GYN physicians, subspecialists, Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), and Family Medicine practitioners. Annually, we care for over 4,000 patients, accounting for nearly one-third of all births in Denver. Our GYN service performs more than 1,300 surgical procedures each year, catering to a diverse patient demographic, predominantly Hispanic/Latina, and speaking over 23 languages.

Schedule and Clinical Responsibilities: A full-time physician will typically have a monthly schedule comprising 12-14 clinical shifts, each lasting either 10 hours (7 AM - 5 PM) or 14 hours (5 PM - 7 AM). The shifts will include a combination of day and night hours, with a particular emphasis on night coverage. Scheduling can be flexible or more structured, depending on individual preferences and other considerations. For instance, shift patterns may include 24-hour shifts or flexible arrangements such as three inpatient night shifts weekly, or two night shifts plus one daytime weekend shift.

This physician will collaborate with the on-call OB/GYN attending to manage concurrent deliveries, handle obstetrical emergencies, and provide patient care. Responsibilities will encompass labor and delivery management, supervision of resident physicians, CNMs, Family Medicine providers, medical students, and other learners, as well as direct clinical care in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, Gynecology, and the Obstetrical Emergency Department. This role is set in a dynamic, acute care environment, where the physician will be part of a multidisciplinary team supported by another OB/GYN attending. A passion for working closely with patients, residents, and learners is essential, along with a commitment to the hospital and department's mission of delivering high-quality, evidence-based patient care.

Academic Affiliation and Medical Education: Our facility serves as one of three clinical sites for the prestigious University of Colorado OB/GYN residency program, which trains nine residents annually. Additionally, we are a clinical site for various medical programs, including those from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and emergency medical services. Our organization is formally affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where all faculty hold full-time academic appointments. Beyond resident and medical student training, our department has recently initiated a new OB/GYN hospitalist fellowship, with the first fellow expected to start in the summer of 2025.

Leadership Opportunities and Professional Growth: This position includes a faculty appointment through the University of Colorado School of Medicine. With the introduction of the hospitalist fellowship, there are significant leadership opportunities available. The Residency Program also offers additional chances for involvement in resident education. Furthermore, there are numerous opportunities to engage in departmental and hospital-level initiatives focused on patient safety, quality improvement, policy development, and other areas.

  • Collaborative multidisciplinary practice model

  • Active involvement in the education of residents, fellows, and medical students

  • Competitive salary and benefits package

  • Located in Denver, offering access to a vibrant cultural scene, diverse neighborhoods, natural beauty, and over 300 days of sunshine annually

  • Our organization is a comprehensive, integrated healthcare provider and serves as a model for safety net institutions nationwide

Qualifications:

  • MD/DO degree from an accredited medical institution

  • Successful completion of an ACGME accredited OB/GYN residency program

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible (certification required within three years) by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology

  • Eligibility for licensure in Colorado

  • Eligibility for privileges at our facility

  • Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification from the American Heart Association

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in an inclusive environment

Changes to this Job Description: The environment within our organization can be dynamic. Roles and responsibilities may be adjusted to meet evolving business needs and objectives, as well as to leverage the skills and experiences of our team members. Consequently, employees may be asked to undertake tasks outside of their specific job descriptions. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is a crucial aspect of this position. This role may also require working standard hours/shifts, along with flexible hours before and after standard shifts, and potentially exceeding 40 hours in a work week.
