Job Summary

The OB Technician assists in obstetric and surgical procedures, acting as a scrub person and handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries. This role plays a key part in ensuring a sterile environment, preparing for procedures, and supporting obstetric teams in providing safe and high-quality patient care. The OB Technician collaborates with nurses, physicians, and surgical staff, assisting in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative tasks.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains sterile and aseptic technique, ensuring proper gowning, gloving, and draping of surgeons and assistants.
  • Prepares the surgical field for cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries, organizing and maintaining instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of step-by-step obstetric procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical team.
  • Monitors and ensures proper handling of surgical instruments, sponges, needles, and supplies, adhering to safety protocols and performing required counts.
  • Assists with patient positioning and room preparation, ensuring proper setup for obstetric and gynecological procedures.
  • Handles and properly labels specimens, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and laboratory standards.
  • Operates, cleans, and processes surgical and obstetric equipment, following proper sterilization and disinfection protocols.
  • Performs errands to pharmacy, lab, and diagnostic imaging departments, ensuring timely delivery of necessary supplies and specimens.
  • Follows Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and facility standards, adhering to best practices for infection control and patient safety.
  • Assists in maintaining unit supplies and equipment, ensuring availability for emergency and scheduled procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Technical School completion of a Surgical Technician or OB Technician training program required
  • 0-1 years of experience as an OB Technician, Surgical Technician, or in a related healthcare role required
  • 1-2 years of experience in labor and delivery, obstetric surgery, or women's health services preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in obstetric and surgical procedures, including sterile technique, instrument handling, and patient positioning.
  • Strong knowledge of infection control, sterilization, and disinfection processes for obstetric and surgical equipment.
  • Ability to anticipate surgical team needs, ensuring smooth and efficient procedural flow.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, collaborating with physicians, nurses, and surgical staff.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols, including proper specimen handling, equipment operation, and surgical counts.
  • Knowledge of AORN and hospital policies related to obstetric and surgical procedures.

Licenses and Certifications

  • BCLS - Basic Life Support required
  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist preferred
