OBD System Sr Engineer
Location: Novi, Michigan - This role requires 4-5 days per week in the office, with regular in-person meetings and events.

Ideal Candidate
Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Controls Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related discipline.
Must have 8+ years of experience in Automotive Systems Engineering, Diagnostics, Powertrain Controls, Electrified Propulsion Systems, or Onboard Diagnostics (OBD).
Must have strong expertise in OBDII regulations, diagnostic architecture, readiness logic, fault detection, monitor strategies, DTC concepts, MIL behavior, and compliance requirements.
Must have experience defining and managing system-level OBD concepts for BEV and/or EREV vehicle platforms.
Must have experience working within Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) architectures.
Must have hands-on experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS, Jama, or Polarion.
Must have experience using automotive diagnostic and analysis tools including CANoe, CANalyzer, CANape, ETAS INCA, MATLAB, and Simulink.

The OBD System Senior Engineer will lead the system-level definition and architecture of Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) for Scout Motors' next-generation Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) and Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) platforms.
This role will define and maintain the overall OBD architecture, monitor philosophy, readiness logic, fault reaction behavior, diagnostic architecture, and regulatory compliance strategy within a software-defined vehicle environment.
The engineer will collaborate closely with software teams, controls engineers, validation teams, systems architects, and powertrain organizations to ensure robust and scalable diagnostic functionality across vehicle platforms.

Key Responsibilities
• Define and maintain the system-level OBD architecture for BEV and EREV vehicle platforms.
• Develop monitor philosophy, readiness logic, diagnostic architecture, fault reaction behavior, and compliance strategies.
• Translate regulatory requirements into structured, traceable system requirements.
• Define interactions between OBD functions and powertrain controls, thermal systems, energy management, and vehicle operating modes.
• Ensure alignment between system architecture, software implementation, validation strategies, and service requirements.
• Support monitor execution conditions, DTC strategies, diagnostic event handling, and vehicle-state dependencies.
• Drive requirements decomposition and allocation into software, controls, and validation deliverables.
• Review technical concepts, interface definitions, and implementation proposals.
• Support validation activities including HIL, SIL, vehicle testing, and release verification.
• Investigate and resolve system-level issues identified during integration and testing.
• Support prototype and production software releases through data analysis, reporting, and requirements maturation.
• Collaborate with concept and architecture teams to develop future diagnostic solutions for software-defined vehicles.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Controls Engineering, or related discipline.
• 8+ years of experience in Automotive Systems Engineering, Diagnostics, Powertrain Controls, Electrified Propulsion, or OBD development.
• Strong understanding of OBDII regulations and diagnostic system requirements.
• Experience defining OBD monitor strategies, readiness behavior, DTC concepts, MIL behavior, and diagnostic architecture.
• Experience working within Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) environments.
• Experience with requirements management tools such as Jama, DOORS, or Polarion.
• Experience with CANoe, CANalyzer, CANape, ETAS INCA, MATLAB, and Simulink.
• Knowledge of UDS diagnostics, CAN communication, Ethernet communication, ECU interactions, and diagnostic event management.
• Strong systems engineering mindset and ability to manage complex vehicle-level interactions.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience supporting Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREV).
• Experience supporting centralized compute architectures, domain controllers, and communication gateways.
• Experience supporting diagnostic systems in software-defined vehicle platforms.
• Experience supporting HIL, SIL, vehicle validation, and release verification activities.
• Strong understanding of cross-domain vehicle software interactions.
