Lenoir Community College is a comprehensive institution which places primary emphasis on excellence in classroom instruction. The Occupational Extension Office Skills/Office Practices - Correctional Instructor will provide computer applications and software training focused towards vocational, basic, and life skills to incarcerated individuals.

  • Requires a degree, certification and/or NC licensure in a vocational and/or life skills subject area from an institutionally accredited college or university
  • Candidate must be able to develop lesson plans and course syllabi, maintain attendance rosters and timesheets, create and teach daily assignments for students
  • A background in teaching is preferred, but not required
  • Candidate should possess effective communication skills, both written and oral, and be able to relate and communicate well with individuals from all socio-economic levels and ethnic groups

Working Conditions

  • Candidate must be willing to work in a correctional institution in direct contact with incarcerated individuals
  • Standard working schedule for this position is Monday - Thursday from 8am-4pm (28 hours weekly)
  • Frequent standing and walking to monitor student progress 

The duties of the Occupation Extension Office Skills/Office Practices - Correctional Instructor include, but are not limited to:

Mastery of Subject Matter

  • Display ability to instruct students on basic to intermediate level computer skills using MS Office programs
  • Help students learn more about career development and job preparation
  • Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of their field or discipline
  • Display an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their field or discipline
  • Connect their subject matter with related fields
  • Stay current in their subject matter through professional development; through involvement in professional organizations; and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops

Teaching Performance

  • Pair classroom instruction with general knowledge that prepares students for a successful transition into the community
  • Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximizes student learning
  • Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students
  • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse students' needs
  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments
  • Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives

Evaluation of Student Learning

  • Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives
  • Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester according to established deadlines
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances
