EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors Degree

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

Registered with the American Occupational Therapy Association

Occupational Therapist Licensure by the State of Texas Licensed by the National Board of Certified Occupational Therapists

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.

PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY:

Function as a member of a trans-disciplinary team whose purpose is to provide an appropriate educational program for students with disabilities. Employ goal directed activities in order to help facilitate the student's physical, sensory and/or perceptual abilities.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Strategies:

  1. Instructs teaching staff (teachers and assistants).

  2. Presents inservice training or therapy related topics to parents and teachers.

  3. Provides occupational therapy input for development of Individual Educational Plans (IEP).

  4. Supervises students in clinical or pre-clinical training from approved universities.

Student Growth and Development:

  1. Assures implementation of appropriate occupational therapy programs to meet IEP goals.

  2. Recommends and assists others in procurement of assistive devices required for student educational participation.

  3. Maintains accurate and current progress reports for each student, ensuring confidentiality.

  4. Reevaluates treatment programs and revises objectives periodically.

Classroom Management and Organization:

  1. Monitors and evaluates effectiveness of occupational therapy treatment programs using observation, collected data, anecdotal records and/or pre-post testing.

  2. Develops and adheres to a daily schedule.

  3. Assists in making recommendations pertaining to architectural barriers in existing and new buildings.

Communication:

  1. Maintains working relationships with classroom teachers, parents and administrative staff.

  2. Attends Admission, Review, Dismissal (ARD)/Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings and meetings set up by Occupational Therapy (OT)/Physical Therapy (PT) Coordinator.

  3. Maintains contact with student's family to coordinate goals, teach and review home programs and assist with problem solving.

Professional Growth and Development:

  1. Coordinates with outside agencies and physicians as necessary (networking).

  2. Maintains and improves professional competencies and knowledge of available products, services and treatment techniques.

  3. Formulates occupational therapy policies and procedures with the program coordinator.

  4. Competes continuing education courses as required for Texas state licensure.

  5. Attends staff development and professional seminars to upgrade and maintain skills.

Other:

  1. Maintains confidentiality of information.

  2. Reports to work on time every day.

  3. Performs additional duties and accepts other responsibilities as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work as part of a trans-disciplinary team
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Valid Texas Drivers License with driving record that meets the requirements of the District

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to drive personal vehicle in the performance of assigned tasks.
