Guidance Counselor - High School

Job Goal: To support the academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary success of all students by providing individualized guidance, fostering a positive school climate, and collaborating with staff, families, and community resources to remove barriers to student achievement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher with a major in guidance and counseling.
  • Certification in guidance and counseling by Kentucky Department of Education.
  • At least one year of successful teaching experience or counseling experience in a high school setting (high school level desired).

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assesses the guidance needs of the local school. Plans, develops and evaluates the guidance program of the school.
  • Provides individual and group counseling services pertaining to vocational, educational, personal and social development.
  • Directs maintenance of the local school permanent record system and assists parents and teachers by interpreting permanent record data and providing other available related information.
  • Provides appropriate materials to students and parents to assist in proper course selection and placement. Assists students in planning their total academic programs and the development of individual learning plans.
  • Provides consultation and referral services to assist parents and students in securing needed services from community agencies.
  • Disseminates accumulated test results and available data to persons initiating referrals for testing and evaluation for exceptional children.
  • Assists classroom teachers by consulting on the special abilities and needs of students, helping to address problems, and helping to plan instructional programs as they relate to student needs.
  • Supervises local school participation in district-wide, state-wide, and AP testing programs and assists in the maintenance of College Entrance Testing Program (SAT, PSAT, ACT, etc.).
  • Provides recommendations and student assessments to colleges, post-secondary schools and employers.
  • Provides scholarships and financial aid information to students.
  • Serves as liaison for the Governor's Scholar Program (GSP); publicizes GSP; assists with applications.
  • Communicates the purposes of the guidance program to students, parents, staff and community.
  • Performs necessary medical-related services for students who have been determined by their physician to need such services, upon written delegation of the responsibilities and proper training by the Director of Health Services or campus nurse.
  • Performs other guidance-related activities necessary to the school-related needs of the student.
  • Assists the leadership team with extracurricular supervision as directed by the principal.
  • Assists the coordinated effort of the implementation of 504, IEP's, PBIS, and RTI to ensure services are successfully implemented.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.
