    Position Summary:

    \n

    The Ocular Recovery Technician/Coordinator is responsible for the

    \n

    respectful, efficient, and compliant recovery of human ocular tissue for transplant,

    \n

    research, and education. This role supports the donation process by responding to referral

    \n

    notifications, coordinating recovery logistics, performing ocular tissue recovery using

    \n

    approved aseptic techniques, collecting required donor information, and ensuring

    \n

    accurate documentation, labeling, packaging, and transport of recovered tissue. The

    \n

    position requires professionalism, compassion, attention to detail, and a strong

    \n

    commitment to honoring donor gifts while supporting sight restoration and medical

    \n

    advancement.

    \n

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    \n

    • Respond promptly to donor referral notifications and maintain availability during

    \n

    assigned on-call shifts.

    \n

    • Coordinate recovery logistics with hospitals, funeral homes, medical examiners,

    \n

    organ procurement organizations, eye bank staff, and other involved partners.

    \n

    • Verify donor identification, authorization, suitability information, and required

    \n

    documentation before recovery.

    \n

    • Perform ocular tissue recovery procedures in accordance with organizational

    \n

    protocols, aseptic technique, and applicable regulatory standards.

    \n

    • Collect, review, and document donor medical history, physical assessment

    \n

    information, laboratory data, blood specimens, and other case-related records.

    \n

    • Maintain chain of custody for recovered tissue, specimens, supplies, and case

    \n

    documentation.

    \n

    • Package, label, store, transport, or arrange shipment of ocular tissue and

    \n

    specimens according to established procedures.

    \n

    • Complete accurate, timely, and thorough documentation in required forms, logs,

    \n

    and database systems.

    \n

    • Maintain recovery kits, supplies, instruments, equipment, vehicles, and work areas

    \n

    in clean, organized, and ready-to-use condition.

    \n

    • Follow universal precautions, infection control procedures, safety requirements,

    \n

    and confidentiality standards at all times.

    \n

    • Represent the organization with professionalism, sensitivity, and respect in

    \n

    healthcare, funeral home, medical examiner, and donor family-related settings.

    \n

    • Participate in training, competency assessments, quality assurance activities,

    Qualifications:

    \n

    • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or coursework in

    \n

    healthcare, biology, anatomy, emergency medical services, surgical technology, or a

    \n

    related field preferred.

    \n

    • Prior experience in healthcare, tissue recovery, eye banking, funeral services,

    \n

    emergency services, laboratory services, surgical technology, or a related field

    \n

    preferred.

    \n

    • Ability to learn and perform aseptic surgical recovery techniques and follow detailed

    \n

    medical protocols.

    \n

    • Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, organizational skills, and ability

    \n

    to maintain confidentiality.

    \n

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact

    \n

    professionally in sensitive situations.

    \n

    • Ability to work independently, make sound decisions within established procedures,

    \n

    and respond calmly under time-sensitive conditions.

    \n

    • Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and ability to travel to recovery

    \n

    locations as required.

    \n

    • Must be able to meet training, competency, and any certification requirements

    \n

    established by the organization.

    \n

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    \n

    • Knowledge of or willingness to learn eye anatomy, tissue donation, donor screening,

    \n

    aseptic technique, and tissue handling practices.

    \n

    • Ability to follow organizational policies, standard operating procedures, applicable

    \n

    eye banking standards, and regulatory requirements.

    \n

    • Strong manual dexterity and comfort using specialized instruments and supplies.

    \n

    • Ability to maintain accurate records and protect donor, recipient, and organizational

    \n

    information.

    \n

    • Commitment to ethical practice, donor dignity, and the mission of donation and

    \n

    transplantation.

    \n

    Schedule and Work Environment:

    \n

    This position may require participation in an on-call rotation, including evenings, nights,

    \n

    weekends, holidays, and variable shifts based on donor referrals and recovery needs. Work may be performed in hospitals, morgues, funeral homes, medical examiner offices,

    \n

    laboratory settings, office settings, and during travel within the assigned service area.

    \n

    Physical Requirements:

    \n

    • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and perform fine motor tasks for extended

    \n

    periods.

    \n

    • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment, supplies, and recovery kits as required

    \n

    by organizational policy.

    \n

    • Ability to drive for work-related travel and respond to recovery locations within

    \n

    required timeframes.

    \n

    • Ability to use personal protective equipment and follow exposure control

    \n

    procedures when working with biological specimens or human tissue.
